Certified Substance Abuse Counselor/CSAC Supervisee

Position: Part-time, with the opportunity to transition to full-time
Anticipated Start: September 2026
Program: Substance Use Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)

Paradox Health is seeking a compassionate, dependable, and motivated Certified Substance Abuse Counselor (CSAC) or Certified Substance Abuse Counselor Supervisee (CSAC-S) to join our new substance use treatment program opening in September 2026.

This position will begin part-time, with the expectation of transitioning to full-time as enrollment and program needs increase. The ideal candidate will understand addiction and recovery, work well within a multidisciplinary team, and provide respectful, person-centered support without judgment.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Complete substance use screenings, intake interviews, and assessments within the scope of the candidate’s credentials and supervision.
  • Help develop individualized treatment plans with measurable recovery goals.
  • Provide individual and group substance use counseling within the counselor’s approved scope of practice.
  • Facilitate educational and therapeutic groups focused on topics such as:
  • Relapse prevention
  • Triggers and coping skills
  • Recovery planning
  • Healthy relationships and boundaries
  • Communication and emotional regulation
  • Life skills and community reintegration
  • Monitor client progress and participation in services.
  • Complete timely and accurate progress notes, treatment-plan reviews, discharge summaries, and other required documentation.
  • Assist clients with identifying barriers to recovery and developing practical solutions.
  • Provide crisis support and immediately report safety concerns to the appropriate licensed clinician or supervisor.
  • Assist with relapse-prevention, continuing-care, and discharge planning.
  • Coordinate services with licensed clinicians, case managers, peer recovery specialists, medical providers, probation officers, and community resources.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary treatment-team meetings and staff training.
  • Maintain appropriate professional boundaries and client confidentiality.
  • Follow HIPAA, Medicaid, DBHDS, licensing, ethical, and organizational requirements.
  • Perform additional substance use counseling duties as the program grows.

Required Qualifications

  • Current Virginia Certified Substance Abuse Counselor credential or active CSAC Supervisee status.
  • CSAC Supervisees must be registered with the appropriate Virginia licensing authority and practice under approved supervision.
  • Education and experience that meet Virginia credentialing requirements.
  • Understanding of substance use disorders, recovery principles, relapse prevention, and co-occurring mental health conditions.
  • Strong group-facilitation, communication, organization, and documentation skills.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating with a multidisciplinary team.
  • Compassionate, reliable, nonjudgmental, and person-centered approach.
  • Basic computer skills and willingness to use an electronic health record system.
  • Ability to complete documentation within required timeframes.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in a PHP, IOP, residential, outpatient, or community-based substance use program.
  • Familiarity with ASAM criteria and level-of-care recommendations.
  • Experience developing treatment plans and facilitating substance use groups.
  • Knowledge of motivational interviewing, CBT-based interventions, trauma-informed care, harm reduction, and crisis response.
  • Familiarity with Virginia Medicaid and DBHDS documentation requirements.
  • Current CPR, First Aid, and naloxone administration training.

Supervision and Scope of Practice

CSAC Supervisees will perform services only within their approved scope of practice and under the supervision required by Virginia regulations. Responsibilities may be adjusted based on the employee’s credential, training, experience, and supervision plan.

This position does not authorize independent diagnosis, psychotherapy, or clinical services outside the individual’s credentials and approved scope of practice.

Schedule and Growth

  • Position will initially be part-time, with hours based on enrollment and program needs.
  • Hours are expected to increase as the program grows.
  • The selected candidate should be interested in transitioning into a full-time role when available.
  • Some scheduling flexibility may be required to meet client and program needs.
