Credit Manager – Steel Industry Experience Preferred

Our client is seeking an experienced Credit Manager to oversee customer credit risk and collections within a fast-paced business environment. Steel industry experience is strongly preferred, along with a background in commercial credit and B2B collections. This position will evaluate and extend credit, establish and enforce credit limits, monitor customer exposure, maintain customer credit information, and manage the collection of past-due balances.

The Credit Manager will work closely with Sales and company leadership to support business growth while protecting the company from excessive credit risk and bad-debt losses. The ideal candidate will have strong commercial credit knowledge, excellent judgment, and the ability to balance customer relationships and sales opportunities with sound credit practices.

Responsibilities:

• Review credit applications and establish appropriate credit terms and limits

• Evaluate customer creditworthiness using credit reports, references, payment history, and financial information

• Maintain and periodically review customer credit limits and credit files

• Monitor customer credit exposure and payment trends

• Enforce credit limits and place accounts on hold when appropriate

• Review requests for temporary or permanent credit-limit increases

• Manage the collection of past-due balances

• Communicate with customers regarding delinquent invoices and payment commitments

• Prioritize collections based on aging, exposure, and credit risk

• Document collection activity and significant account issues

• Escalate high-risk accounts and coordinate outside collection or legal action when necessary

• Work closely with Sales to balance customer needs with appropriate credit discipline

• Communicate credit limits, holds, past-due balances, and credit concerns as needed

• Partner with Sales to resolve issues that may be delaying payment

• Evaluate credit needs as customer business and sales volume grows

• Review accounts receivable aging and identify deteriorating payment trends or increasing exposure

• Monitor customers approaching or exceeding established credit limits

• Keep management informed of significant credit and collection risks

• Recommend changes to credit terms, limits, or account status as needed

Qualifications:

• Steel industry experience strongly preferred

• Experience in commercial credit and B2B collections required

• Experience in metals, industrial distribution, manufacturing, or a related industry preferred

• Strong understanding of commercial credit and risk management

• Proven ability to evaluate creditworthiness and make sound credit decisions

• Strong communication, negotiation, and collection skills

• Sound judgment with the ability to balance sales growth with credit risk

• Strong organizational and analytical skills

• Ability to prioritize collection activity based on aging, exposure, and risk

• Experience with ERP systems and credit reporting tools

• Proficiency with Microsoft Excel

• Strong attention to detail and follow-through

• Ability to communicate effectively with customers, Sales, leadership, and internal departments
