About the Role:
The Patient Access Specialist plays a critical role in ensuring a seamless and positive experience for patients as they enter the healthcare system. This position is responsible for managing patient registration, verifying insurance information, and facilitating communication between patients and healthcare providers. The specialist acts as the first point of contact, providing clear and compassionate assistance to patients regarding their appointments, billing, and insurance coverage. By accurately collecting and processing patient data, the role supports efficient clinical operations and helps maintain compliance with healthcare regulations. Ultimately, the Patient Access Specialist contributes to the overall quality of care by enabling timely access to medical services and fostering patient satisfaction.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent required; associate degree or higher preferred.
- Previous experience in a healthcare or customer service role, preferably in patient registration or access services.
- Basic knowledge of medical terminology and healthcare insurance processes.
- Proficiency with computer systems and electronic health record (EHR) software.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills to interact effectively with patients and healthcare staff.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Certification as a Patient Access Specialist (CPAS) or similar credential.
- Experience working in a hospital or outpatient clinic setting.
- Familiarity with insurance verification tools and billing procedures.
- Bilingual abilities to support diverse patient populations.
- Training in HIPAA compliance and patient privacy regulations.
Responsibilities:
- Greet patients and visitors in a professional and courteous manner, ensuring a welcoming environment.
- Collect and verify patient demographic and insurance information accurately during the registration process.
- Schedule and confirm patient appointments, coordinating with clinical staff to optimize patient flow.
- Assist patients with understanding their insurance benefits, co-pays, and financial responsibilities.
- Maintain patient records and data entry with strict adherence to confidentiality and HIPAA regulations.
- Resolve patient inquiries and concerns promptly, escalating complex issues to appropriate departments.
- Collaborate with billing and clinical teams to ensure accurate documentation and smooth patient transitions.
- Utilize electronic health record (EHR) systems to update patient information and track appointment statuses.

The Patient Access Specialist utilizes strong communication skills daily to interact empathetically and clearly with patients, ensuring they understand their healthcare options and financial responsibilities. This position is scheduled for Monday-Friday 8 AM - 5 PM with a one hour lunch break.
This position is budgeted for FT 40 hours per week. This position is eligible for overtime, as applicable.
