What are the responsibilities and job description for the ANIMAL CONTROL OFFICER II position at Palm Beach County?
Responds to and conducts comprehensive investigations into suspected animal abuse and neglect; interviews witnesses and pet owners; processes evidence; writes detailed reports; prepares case files; and testifies in open court and during appeal hearings, all while conducting in-field training activities. Coordinates and assists with the training of new Animal Control Officers; identifies, develops, and coordinates training programs in areas where additional instructions are needed; develops and maintains detailed training plans for new Animal Control Officers. Acts as a liaison with the State Attorney's Office and local law enforcement agencies. Confiscates animals and educates owners on appropriate and legally required care of animals. Responds to and investigates reports of animal attacks and impounds animals that may be fractious. Enforces County Ordinances and Florida State Statutes as needed through the issuance of violation notices, civil citations, and filing criminal charges.
Qualifications
Associate's Degree or 60 college credits in Animal/Health Science, or Criminal Justice; minimum of two (2) years of experience as an Animal Control Officer or similar experience in a kennel, animal shelter, law enforcement, or similar agency working under animal control laws.
Equivalency
Graduation from high school or an equivalent recognized certification and five (5) years of experience as an Animal Control Officer or similar experience in a kennel, animal shelter, law enforcement, or similar agency working under animal control laws.
Necessary Special Requirements: Must obtain and maintain Florida Animal Control Association (FACA) Animal Control Officer Certification and Euthanasia Technician Certification within six (6) months of hire. Must obtain a Livestock Education and Certification for Agriculture Law Enforcement (LECALE) Certification AND a Law Enforcement Training Institute (LETI) Certification within 11 months of hire.
PREFERENCE FOR: FACA Animal Control Officer Certification; FACA Euthanasia Technician Certification; Chemical Capture Certification; National Animal Cruelty Investigator Certification; Large Animal Rescue Certification.
Must be able to lift 100 pounds. Valid Florida Driver's License and PBC Risk Management Department driving history approval prior to appointment. Respiratory screen/chest x-ray required for selected candidate.
Will be required to complete a "Willingness to Work" Acknowledgment with application. Selected candidate must successfully complete the pre-exposure rabies treatment/vaccination.
