Train Dispatcher

Paducah & Louisville Railway, Inc. has an open position for a Train Dispatcher in Paducah, KY.   The Train Dispatcher is responsible for directing the movement of trains and on track equipment within assigned territory in a safe and efficient manner in accordance with FRA, AAR, and Company rules, policies and regulations. All necessary safety procedures, guidelines and policies must be adhered to in the performance of the tasks assigned to this position as set forth below.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

• Directs and coordinates the safe movement of railroad traffic from a centralized traffic control unit.
• Activates track switches and signals, by planning for movement.
• Issuing Track Warrants & Joint Authorities
• Maintains complete records of all train movements, permissions and authorities
• Knows assigned territory and keeps informed of changes in physical characteristics.
• Communicates with appropriate personnel on any weather or environmental changes
• Formulates plans for train movement based on track availability, conditions, speed restrictions, weather conditions and crew availability.
• Assigns locomotives and crews to trains
• Schedules departure and movement of trains on specific tracks and sidings
• Operates controls to activate train switches and traffic signals
• Communicates with crew members and train engineer to relay changes in instructions and schedules.
• Reports alleged violations of operating rules to the Director – Train Operations
• Plans in advance for the smooth and effective operation of trains.
• Coordinates track usage
• Monitors train inspection devices.
• Assumes duties and responsibilities of the Yardmaster when required to do so.

Position requirements include:

• working evenings, nights, and weekends as scheduled
• work in an environment that requires independent thought and decision making when performing job tasks and routines
• Working under Time Pressure to meet strict deadlines.
• Working sitting for long periods of time with infrequent breaks. Meals eaten while working.
• Working alone and independently with minimal supervision, manage time effectively and maintain control over multiple projects and responsibilities; follow up on relevant matters.
  

Reasoning Ability:

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.  Ability to deal with problems involving several variables in a variety of situations. Ability to logically interpret instructions and equipments and apply them independently to job responsibilities.

Language Ability:

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.  Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.  Ability to communicate clearly, concisely and safely with co-workers, and supervisors. Ability to comprehend instructions and tasks and provide co-workers and supervisors with appropriate feed back on assigned job duties and responsibilities.

Education/Training/Certification:

High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required.  An Associate degree is preferred.
