P3Hired is partnering with a DMV area client to identify a highly experienced and strategic Principal to lead and grow an integrated architecture and real estate development firm specializing in residential design. This individual will oversee the overall performance of the Residential (Single Family/Townhome) studio, including operations, financial results, team leadership, and business development.
The Principal will oversee Designers and Project Managers, ensuring excellence in design, technical execution, and project delivery while driving long-term growth and client relationships.
This position is based in McLean, VA and requires full-time, in-office presence.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Operations
- Provide strong leadership to a multidisciplinary team, fostering a high-performance, collaborative environment
- Oversee day-to-day studio operations, including staff performance, project delivery, and financial outcomes
- Ensure all projects meet quality, budget, and schedule expectations
- Develop and execute the group’s business plan aligned with company goals
Business Development & Client Management
- Lead business development efforts, including securing new clients and expanding existing relationships
- Serve as a senior client contact and trusted advisor
- Identify strategic growth opportunities and strengthen market position
- Represent the firm in professional organizations and industry events
Project Oversight & Delivery
- Review and approve proposals, contracts, budgets, and project scopes
- Oversee design, documentation, and construction administration processes
- Ensure technical accuracy and coordination across all projects
- Participate in programming, feasibility studies, and design leadership
- Resolve complex construction and design issues
Financial Management
- Manage studio financial performance, including revenue, profitability, and utilization targets
- Approve project billings, budgets, and financial adjustments
- Support collections and ensure financial accountability across projects
People Management & Development
- Recruit, mentor, and develop team members across all levels
- Conduct performance evaluations and career development planning
- Build succession plans and develop future leaders
- Promote a culture of accountability, growth, and continuous improvement
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Architecture or related field
- Licensed Architect (active license required; minimum 5 years licensed)
- 15 years of experience in residential architecture, specifically single-family and/or townhome design
- Experience working with large-scale residential developers or homebuilders
- Proven track record of successful project delivery and team leadership
- Proficiency in Revit, AutoCAD, and Adobe Creative Suite
- Strong understanding of building codes, construction methods, and materials
- Experience with project management tools and Microsoft Office Suite
- Strong leadership, decision-making, and problem-solving abilities
- Excellent communication and presentation skills
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
- High level of professionalism, integrity, and business acumen
- Strategic thinker with strong negotiation and client management skills
- Detail-oriented with a strong design sensibility
- Experience in single-family and townhome residential design required
