Primary Purpose:The purpose of the Site Safety & Health Officer (SSHO) is to implement and oversee the organization's health and safety policies for each construction project. To ensure the organization is compliant with health and safety legislation and to reduce or prevent hazards, dangers, and accidents. This role not only ensures the health and safety of the workers but also of the workplace, environment, and the general public.
Major Duties and Responsibilities/Accountabilities:
1. Inspect the workplace for potential hazards, identify potential hazards and assess the risk, and report and correct potential hazards.
2. Conduct investigations by responding to accidents and emergencies.
3. Ensure the company is compliant with legislative and regulatory necessities, including OSHA and EM 385 1-1 requirements.
4. Conduct training with on-site staff and subcontractors to make sure they are aware of regulations and procedures while also providing guidance.
5. Prepare and review Accident Prevention Plans and Activity Hazard Analysis.
6. Perform daily safety inspections and associated reports.
7. Ensure all subcontractors follow and adhere to all site safety controls while enforcing/disciplining individuals when needed.
8. Communicate effectively with Project Superintendent, Quality Control Manager, Government Representatives, OSHA, and other Agencies, as well as vendors/subcontractors.
9. Maintain thorough safety records and manage all required reporting.
10. Enforce compliance by initiating disciplinary actions such as warnings, retraining, or removal from the site.
11. Stop Work Authority granted to halt all work until corrections are made.
12. Report all deficiencies to the Assistant Director of Safety for record keeping, and if needed, support for corrective actions.
13. Ability to perform basic first aid in the event of an emergency in a stressful environment.
Minimum Requirements:
Skills:
1. Ability to prepare plans and reports as needed.
2. Proficient in productivity and collaboration tools such as Microsoft 365, Google Workspace, or equivalent.
3. Extensive knowledge of USACE EM385-1-1.
4. Problem-Solving Skills
5. Team Oriented
Experience:
1. Minimum 5 years of safety work on similar types of work (Work for USACE, Air Force and/or Naval Facilities Command).
Education:
1. Bachelor’s degree in a related field or higher
2. OSHA 30 Hour certified or higher
3. 24 Hours of documented formal classroom or online SOH-related training within the past 5 years.
4. EM-385-1-1 40 Hour
Working Conditions: The Site Safety & Health Officers work primarily from an on-site job trailer and collaborate closely with the Assistant Director of Safety, Project Manager, Superintendent, and Quality Control Manager. The role involves a mix of office duties and fieldwork, with physical demands that may include lifting, climbing, and extended periods of standing or walking. Work environments range from standard office settings to construction sites or industrial areas, with potential exposure to environmental and safety hazards. Travel and on-site presence is required.
