Company & Role Overview

• Our client is a Sioux Falls-based industrial technology firm founded in 2012, with roughly 150 employees and operations in Sioux Falls, Omaha, and St. Louis.
• The company serves clients nationwide across ethanol, water and wastewater, sugar beet and soybean processing, biodiesel, oil and gas, and power generation, through several business units, each with its own P&L: industrial automation and systems integration, data management, managed IT, equipment, and design and fabrication.
• The company is growing through a combination of acquisitions and organic expansion, including a pending acquisition of an electrical construction business.
• This is the company's first full-time CFO role in roughly five years, following a progression from outside bookkeeping to a fractional CFO. The CFO reports to the CEO and leads the Controller and accounting team.
• The next CFO will build the financial infrastructure that supports growth over the next three or more years, putting in place the systems, processes, and reporting that give the CEO and business unit leaders a clear, current view of performance, and will serve as a true strategic partner to the CEO.

Roles & Responsibilities

• Lead the financial side of acquisitions, including diligence, valuation, deal structure, and post-close integration of acquired companies into the company's reporting and controls.
• Partner with the CEO on capital planning, financing, and banking relationships to fund organic and acquisitive growth.
• Work with outside tax and legal advisors on entity structure, tax planning, and ownership-related strategy.
• Provide the CEO and leadership team with financial analysis that informs pricing, investment, and resource decisions.
• Own annual budgeting and rolling forecasts for each business unit and for the consolidated company.
• Build a KPI dashboard with clear red, yellow, and green indicators so leaders can see at a glance where each business unit stands.
• Present financial results and trends at bi-weekly leadership meetings, moving the team from a point-in-time snapshot to forward-looking insight.
• Deliver accurate, timely monthly close and consolidated and business-unit-level financial statements.
• Lead, develop, and grow the accounting team, including the Controller, and add staff where the current team is stretched.
• Oversee project and job cost accounting, work-in-progress schedules, and revenue recognition across service, project, and construction work.
• Manage multi-state compliance, including payroll tax, sales and use tax, registrations, and licensing obligations as the company expands.
• Establish and maintain internal controls, and coordinate audits or reviews with outside accountants.
• Take ownership of the NetSuite ERP as the current implementation wraps up, and build out reporting, workflows, and automation within it.
• Document and standardize finance processes so they scale with new business units and acquired companies.
• Serve as a hands-on partner to business unit leaders, helping them understand and manage the financial performance of their units.
• Take full ownership of the finance function so the CEO can stay focused on leading the business.

Skills & Requirements

• 10 years of progressive finance and accounting experience, including at least 5 years leading a finance function as CFO, VP of Finance, or senior Controller.
• Experience with multi-entity or multi-business-unit organizations with separate P&Ls.
• Direct M&A experience, ideally on the buy side, including diligence and integration.
• Strong background in project-based accounting, including job costing, WIP, and percentage-of-completion revenue recognition.
• Hands-on experience with NetSuite or a comparable mid-market ERP.
• Track record of building forecasting models, KPI reporting, and scalable processes in a growing company.
• Ability to work on-site in Sioux Falls, SD, five days per week.
• Preferred: CPA license.
• Preferred: Industry experience in industrial automation, engineering services, electrical or specialty construction, managed IT, or manufacturing.
• Preferred: Experience in founder-led or privately held companies, including work with ownership on tax and structure planning.
• Preferred: Familiarity with Lean or Six Sigma principles as applied to finance operations.
• Preferred: Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance; MBA a plus.
