About The Owenego
The Owenego, affectionately known as “The O,” is a historic, family-oriented beach and tennis club on the shores of Long Island Sound in Branford, Connecticut. Since the late 1800s, The O has been a cherished gathering place where members swim, kayak, dine, and play tennis on our three beautifully maintained red clay courts—one of the few clubs in the region to offer this premium playing surface. We are seeking an enthusiastic, skilled Tennis Professional to lead our tennis programming and help foster a welcoming, active tennis community for members of all ages and abilities.
Position Summary
The Tennis Professional will oversee the club’s tennis program, providing private and group instruction, organizing clinics and social play, and maintaining the quality and atmosphere of our red clay courts. This is a part-time, freelance position ideal for a passionate tennis professional who thrives in a relaxed, community-driven club setting.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver private, semi-private, and group tennis lessons for adults and juniors at all skill levels, from beginners to advanced players.
- Design and run seasonal tennis clinics, round robins, mixers, and other social tennis events that encourage member participation and community building.
- Develop and manage a junior tennis program, including introductory camps and skills development for children of club members.
- Coordinate court scheduling, lesson bookings, and organized play to ensure efficient use of all three red clay courts.
- Promote proper red clay court etiquette and care among players, including rolling, watering, and line-sweeping protocols.
- Manage court maintenance and communicate facility/equipment needs to management.
- Create a positive, inclusive atmosphere that reflects The Owenego’s laid-back, family-friendly spirit.
- Serve as a knowledgeable resource for members on equipment, technique, strategy, and match play.
- Help promote the tennis program through word of mouth, club communications, and on-site engagement with members.
Qualifications
- Proven playing and teaching experience in tennis; certification from the USPTA, PTR, or equivalent organization is strongly preferred.
- Experience with red clay court play and maintenance is a significant plus.
- Demonstrated ability to teach players of all ages and skill levels, with a patient, encouraging coaching style.
- Strong interpersonal skills and a genuine enthusiasm for building relationships within a close-knit club community.
- Dependable, self-motivated, and comfortable managing your own schedule as an independent contractor.
- CPR/First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain prior to start date).
Compensation & Details
- Freelance / independent contractor arrangement—flexible scheduling based on member demand and program calendar.
- Lesson and clinic fees may be structured as a revenue share or set rate, to be discussed during the interview process.
- Seasonal position aligned with the club’s summer operating season, with potential to extend into shoulder months depending on demand.
