About The Owenego
The Owenego, affectionately known as “The O,” is a historic, family-oriented beach and tennis club on the shores of Long Island Sound in Branford, Connecticut. Our waterfront is at the heart of everything we do—members and their families swim, wade, kayak, and play along the shoreline all summer long. We are seeking responsible, experienced lifeguards with open water training and current American Red Cross certification to help ensure the safety of our members and guests in this beautiful but dynamic coastal environment.
Position Summary
The Lifeguard will be responsible for the safety and well-being of all swimmers and beachgoers at The Owenego’s waterfront on Long Island Sound. This is an open water environment with tidal changes, currents, rocky shoreline, and a mix of swimmers ranging from young children to adults. The ideal candidate brings real-world open water experience, sharp situational awareness, and the calm confidence to act decisively in an emergency—all while contributing to the welcoming, family-friendly atmosphere that defines The O.
Key Responsibilities
- Maintain constant, vigilant surveillance of the designated swimming and beach areas along Long Island Sound, actively scanning for signs of distress or unsafe behavior.
- Enforce club swimming rules, waterfront policies, and designated swimming boundaries to prevent accidents and ensure a safe environment for all ages.
- Respond swiftly and effectively to water emergencies, performing rescues, first aid, CPR, and AED administration as needed.
- Monitor changing water and weather conditions—including tides, currents, and wind—and communicate hazards to swimmers or close the waterfront when conditions warrant.
- Maintain rescue equipment, first aid supplies, and safety signage in clean, functional, and readily accessible condition.
- Complete incident and rescue reports accurately and promptly, communicating all incidents to club management.
- Assist with general beach area upkeep, including setup and breakdown of safety markers, flags, and equipment as needed.
Qualifications
- Current American Red Cross Lifeguard certification is required, including First Aid, CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer.
- American Red Cross Waterfront Lifeguarding or open water lifeguard certification is required.
- Demonstrated open water swimming ability and comfort operating in a tidal, coastal environment with variable conditions.
- Previous lifeguarding experience in an ocean, sound, lake, or other open water setting is strongly preferred.
- Calm, focused, and decisive under pressure with excellent judgment skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively with members, families, and children of all ages.
- Dependable, punctual, and committed to maintaining the highest standards of safety throughout the season.
