Position Description
The Construction Project Accountant is responsible for managing the financial and accounting activities related to assigned construction projects. This role plays a critical part in ensuring accurate project billings, cost tracking, financial reporting, and subcontractor payment processing.
The Construction Project Accountant reports to the Director of Finance and works closely with Project Managers, subcontractors, and internal accounting staff to support the financial success of each project. This position is well-suited for a motivated, detail-oriented individual who is eager to learn construction accounting and contribute to improving financial and operational processes.
Primary Responsibilities
- Generate, submit, and track owner billings, including AIA forms (G702/G703)
- Prepare and maintain accurate Work in Progress (WIP) reports
- Manage project-related accounts payable and accounts receivable
- Review subcontractor pay applications for accuracy and compliance with contract terms
- Process subcontractor payments and maintain proper documentation
- Track project costs and ensure expenses are properly coded and recorded
- Prepare and analyze project-level financial reports
- Maintain accurate financial data within project management and accounting software (Sage CM)
Additional Responsibilities
- Maintain organized and complete financial files for assigned projects
- Investigate unbilled or misclassified project costs and resolve discrepancies
- Calculate and process project-related tax payments as required
- Review and confirm contract status for new and ongoing subcontractor billings
- Monitor project cost trends and assist Project Managers with cost forecasting
- Identify financial issues or risks and communicate them to the Director of Finance and project team
- Support month-end close activities related to construction projects
- Assist with other accounting and finance responsibilities as needed
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
- Strong interest in construction accounting and project-based financial management
- High level of initiative with a proactive, solution-oriented mindset
- Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy
- Effective communication and analytical skills
- Ability to collaborate across teams and work closely with Project Managers
- Experience with Sage CM and Sage Intacct is a strong plus, but not required
