Project Accounting Supervisor

We have an opening for a Financial Reporting Analyst in Fergus Falls, MN. Our company’s commitment is to environmental, economic, and community stewardship and we balance each decision we make with the impact it has on our friends and neighbors.

A bachelor’s degree is required. A degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a closely related field is preferred. Candidates must demonstrate a solid understanding of accounting principles, procedures, and practices, along with advanced proficiency in Excel, Word, and Financial Information Systems. Experience with Oracle Fusion, project accounting, and the FERC Uniform System of Accounts is preferred.

In this position, you will supervise, mentor, and develop project accounting staff, assigning tasks, monitoring performance, and providing ongoing feedback and coaching to foster professional growth. You will ensure accurate and timely reporting of monthly and quarterly results for all project accounting activities, while overseeing the preparation of variance analysis under both US GAAP and Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) reporting standards. You will lead efforts to enhance processes and reporting, recommending and implementing procedures to resolve data quality issues and improve efficiency across the team.

You will supervise and support internal and external audits and SOX reviews, ensuring the team’s readiness and compliance with all regulatory requirements. Additionally, you will conduct and oversee accounting research on US GAAP and FERC accounting topics as requested, and assist with the implementation of new accounting standards.

Beyond project accounting, you will supervise key administrative and financial functions, including preparing and forecasting O&M and Capital Budgets, tracking schedule performance and project costs, and maintaining confidentiality and accuracy of all data. You will oversee purchasing, receiving, accounts payable and receivable, work orders, and records management, while developing and improving administrative processes, procedures, and reporting systems.

As a supervisor, you will resolve complex accounting issues impacting strategic business initiatives and identify potential accounting risks, providing guidance and solutions to your team. You will foster a collaborative and high-performing team environment, promoting continuous improvement and best practices in project accounting. Effective communication with other departments, project managers, and senior leadership will be essential to ensure alignment on project accounting matters.

The ideal candidate will have a bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance, with a minimum of three years’ experience in project accounting or a related field, and supervisory experience is preferred. You should be a motivated team player who can lead in a complex and fast-paced environment, with the ability to manage numerous deadlines, prioritize workload, and delegate tasks effectively. Strong problem-solving and analytical skills, attention to detail, and superior communication, interpersonal, and leadership abilities are essential. Experience with Microsoft Office is required and  SQL, and/or Power BI is preferred.

Additional helpful qualifications include prior experience in regulated utility industry operations, a CPA designation, strong US GAAP knowledge and awareness of SEC reporting requirements, and an understanding of FERC accounting and reporting requirements.
