Description

Working Title: Multicultural Outreach Navigator

Transition newly arrived SRBs

  • Plan the SRBs commute/navigation to school with family, considering safety, sustainability, and a gradual release plan. Collaborate with the school principal. Options could include route navigation training on foot, by bicycle, or by Go Bus. The director of curriculum & instruction and the district transportation coordinator would be consulted if Kobussen bus or taxi services are needed. As able give new SRB school supplies
  • Prepare and provide ESOL student school orientation guide and materials to newly arrived families
  • Prepare and provide RYM, DCF, Immunization, and other relevant program forms for school and state agencies with information from newly arrived and current families.
  • Schedule a time to meet with a newly arrived family to introduce them and SRB’s in the household to the school district in order to provide an orientation to the ESOL school program, get forms signed, begin rapport building, and gauging any other immediate needs the family might have for their children
  • Conduct an educational assessment based on standards provided by ESOL staff on newly arrived school-age SRBs.
  • Collaborate with ESOL and school staff to schedule times for SRBS and their family to tour their new school prior to starting.
  • Collaborate with GoTransit (City of Oshkosh Bus Service) to acquire student bus passes for SRB’s that are eligible and get but passes to the SRBs.
  • Support SRBs with transportation to and from their school during the first week until the student is transitioned into transportation independence by the navigator or MCO staff.
  • Support newly arrived SRBs during their first day of school or until comfortable by assisting with transitory items, arriving to the appropriate classes, and by introducing them to their peers.
  • Report any resource deficiencies and needs to the MCO Liaison and keep track of what MCO has for SRBs in the district
  • Acquire resources as permitted by the MCO Liaison and distribute resources to families in the community as needed.
  • Collaborate with MCO support staff to assist with SRB transition as needed.

Support transitioned SRB’s through:

  • Culture-specific and language-appropriate materials, such as special assignments or activities for refugee children;
  • Utilization of district translation and interpretation services for families during school activities;
  • Flexible tutoring times during and outside of school hours, including after-school classes, weekend tutorials, and online assistance;
  • Cultural orientation;
  • School orientation, including refugee parent/teacher meetings;
  • Programs that help refugee youth adjust to American school systems, including English as a Second Language (ESL) classes, mentoring, group activities, Specific support for measurable classroom performance, including completing homework on a timely basis, improving grades, and achieving high school graduation.

Qualifications
Qualifications

1. Post secondary education in counseling, communication, education, anthropology, or a related field.

2. Proven ability to connect with and communicate with immigrant populations.

3. Strong interpersonal and written/verbal communication skills.

4. A collaborative attitude and evidence of successfully working within a team structure

5. A high level of organization.

6. Ability to work with varied school and Oshkosh area communities.

7. Strong advocate and demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion with proven ability to work with a diverse student and workplace population.


Preferred

1. Bachelor’s degree in counseling, communication, education, anthropology, or a related field
2. Bilingual
3. Professional experience working with individuals with refugee backgrounds
4. Proven skill in working with an electronic student record-keeping database and Google Workplace applications; and a facility for mastering new software formats as needed.
5. Experience working with program coordinators, instructional academic staff, and students
6. Strong public speaking and presentation skills.
