Expected pay for this position is $44.77 - $52.67/hour. Actual pay will be determined by experience, skills and internal equity. This is a Salaried position.
Overview
This position will support risk management for both OSF St. Anthony Medical Center in Rockford and OSF St. Francis Hosptial and Medical Group in Escanaba, MI,
POSITION SUMMARY: The Risk Manager proactively identifies risks and promotes effective risk controls for the regional hospital(s), hospital outpatient departments (HOD), and OSF Multi-Specialty Groups (OSFMSG). Accountable for and evaluates loss prevention and reduction, claims management, and facilitates effective communication between the patient/family and other members of the health care team relative to the disclosure of unanticipated care events. Maintains a process for reporting to hospital, HOD and OSFMSG regional leadership and to Ministry Risk Management all relevant risk management issues and findings, including significant events, claims and trends. Serves as a member of the hospital, HOD and OSFMSG leadership teams in the region. Collaborates closely and effectively with Ministry, hospital, HOD and OSFMSG clinical, operational, quality, patient safety, patient relations, legal services, and credentialing leadership. Participates in the collection, management, or analysis of information for reporting PSWP, as outlined in the OSF Patient Safety Evaluation System. This position is responsible for initiative and activities designed to: identify, evaluate and mitigate professional and general liability risk; formulate and implement risk reduction strategies in order to minimize financial loss to the organization; and integrate risk management into the day-to-day clinical operations at the hospitals, Works with HODs and OSFMSG offices with regard to patient care, procedures, medication management, specimen labeling and tracking, informed consent, documentation, effective physician practice communication, policy education and other matters that improve quality and patient safety initiatives.
PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACCOUNTABILITY:
In conjunction with the Risk management team, develops and maintains a strategic risk management plan for region based on clinical and other risks identified through risk assessments and investigations, as well as, on the risk trends and patterns identified and prioritized through analysis of the data in the loss run reports.
The plan includes identified risks and proposed risk controls and other approaches for managing risk. Assigns accountability for taking the steps necessary to manage the identified risks. Methods in developing the plan include risk avoidance, risk prevention, risk reduction, risk segregation, risk financing and risk transfer.
Investigates and analyzes claims that arise from the OSF Cares Program to assess liability and the probability of legal action. Ensures disclosure of unanticipated care events is communicated appropriately and timely in collaboration with the OSF Cares Patient Liaison.
Conducts proactive risk assessments in high risk areas of the region in order to identify emerging and unanticipated risks. Identifies improvement opportunities and coordinates the implementation of risk mitigation action plans.
Oversees claims administration related to professional and general liability through investigation and collaboration with divisional leadership and legal counsel. Manage, monitor, and analyze all risk management data identified from professional and general liability claims. Monitors and reviews loss run reports in order to identify risk management trends.
Provide support to patient/family and other members of the health care team when an unanticipated event occurs.
Manage various litigation-related activities, including delivering subpoenas and facilitating deposition preparation.
Coordinates completion of the discovery request and records released for litigation. Maintains legal case files while ensuring maximum protection from discoverability.
Serves as the risk management representative during depositions, settlement negotiations and trials.
Coordinates reporting disciplinary actions to IDFPR as required by IDFPR guidelines.
Investigates reports of product/equipment problems in order to determine the appropriate response. Participates in the process of completing the Safe Medical Device Act reporting as required by statute.
Meets monthly with appropriate regional/facility leadership to coordinate clinical, risk management and patient safety activities.
Leads risk management process improvement initiatives focused on the reduction of unanticipated events and responsible for communicating outcomes to leadership.
Supports and recommends risk mitigation strategies to regional leadership/facilities on risk management issues in order to improve patient satisfaction, reduce liability and improve patient outcomes.
Advises Mission Partners and regional leaders on risk management inquiries from within the region with respect to patient care, procedures, medication management, specimen labeling and tracking, informed consent, documentation, effective physician communication, policy education and other matters.
Promotes and educates compliance with federal and state statutes and regulations as well as participates in CMS, IDPH and other federal and state agency investigations.
Qualifications
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Education: Bachelor's Degree in nursing, legal or other clinical related field
Experience: 1 year experience in Quality and Safety. 3 years' experience in clinical risk management, patient safety or healthcare leadership. Thorough understanding of how to apply federal and state statutes in healthcare.
Other Skills/ Knowledge: Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Solid computer skills, including proficiency with Microsoft software. Strong analytical and problem solving skills, with the ability to be detail oriented.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Experience: Experience and comfortable presenting educational materials to diverse audiences Licensure/ Certification: Risk Management or Patient Safety Certification
