Maker Program Specialist

The Maker Program Specialist is an engaging person responsible for communicating to the general public about various sciences with a focus on hands-on making through the use of workshops, demonstrations, hands-on activities, and community partners in an informal setting. The Science Program Specialist will deliver educational content in the following ways: creation and implementation of maker related programming for The Hive: A Makerspace including open make activities and hands-on workshops, large capacity auditorium programming on and off museum grounds, guided tours and presentations, exhibit hall facilitation, and floor demonstrations. The Specialist will develop content for instructional use in all facets maker programming assigned by Director of Programs and/or Manager of Public Programs. Specialists must have the ability to complete tasks with minimal supervision and demonstrate excellent customer service skills. Focus on specific STEM assets includes the development of diverse programs, coordination of grant funded projects, and staff training/development. 

Essential Functions

• Develops content for the Hive: A Makerspace including themed open ended making, staff led workshops, special event programming and live demonstrations.
• Lead programming content creation and delivery for large scale offsite events including Maker Faire Orlando and Immerse. 
• Engages science center members and general public about various sciences with the use of demonstrations and hands-on activities in an informal setting in a professional and welcoming manner.
• Works with a high degree of independence on multiple projects in parallel.
• Reports regularly on project progress and oversees budgets and resource allocations as necessary.
• Develops content with a creative approach to new ideas and projects.
• Creates new live science demonstrations, programs, and shows that supplement special events, media opportunities and exhibits with a focus on specific STEM assets.
• Exhibits exemplary written and oral communication skills.
• Able to problem solve with flexibility and demonstrate good judgment in a variety of situations.

• Performs other related duties as assigned.

 Minimum Qualifications 

• Education: Degree seeking or hold a bachelor’s degree in science education, chemistry, physical science, physics, astronomy, or other related sciences.
• Experience & Certifications: The candidate should have experience speaking in front of a large audience and a minimum of 2 years teaching either informally or in a classroom setting.

 Preferred Qualifications

• Good written and oral communication.
• Excellent customer service skills.
• Improv and/or theater background is preferred.
• Crafting/maker skills including experience with any of the following: woodworking, 3D printing, computer design, textiles, paper crafting, leather working, basic tools, soldering. 
• Knowledge of soundboards and light boards within a theater environment is desirable.

 Expected Hours of Work & Travel

• This position is full time and primarily works 3 days during the week, 2 weekend days.
• This position must be able to work weekends and after hour events as needed. 
• Travel throughout the Central Florida area and beyond will be required to attend conferences/trainings/deliver programs.

This position is required to be onsite.
