Job Summary

The College of Engineering, School of Mechanical, Industrial, & Manufacturing Engineering, is seeking four short-term Advanced Manufacturing Training Consultants. These are full-time (1.00 FTE), 12-month, positions. These positions are expected to last approximately 12 months.

The position supports the mission of a $5M contract from the Small Business Administration (SBA) for the project titled “Pacific Northwest Institute for Advanced Manufacturing (PACNW-IAM)” to strengthen the skills of small and medium manufacturers in Oregon and across the Pacific Northwest. As a subject‑matter expert, the position will provide technical consulting services to community colleges and manufacturing firms by developing and leading advanced manufacturing training workshops in Precision & Advanced Manufacturing Skills and Smart Manufacturing & Reshoring Readiness.

Key Responsibilities

  • Engage partners to assess the state of workforce readiness in manufacturing firms and manufacturing education in community colleges in relation to Precision & Advanced Manufacturing Skills and Smart Manufacturing & Reshoring.
  • Provide recommendations and technical advice to community colleges and manufacturing firms on necessary training in advanced manufacturing to close knowledge, skills, and capabilities gaps in their students and workforce, respectively.
  • Develop and lead workshops in Precision & Advanced Manufacturing Skills or Smart Manufacturing & Reshoring Readiness.
  • Respond to emails from partners and workshop participants regarding workshop logistics and content.
  • Contribute to the evaluation of program implementation and training outcomes.
  • Attend and participate in group meetings as directed.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • MS/MEng in industrial engineering, manufacturing engineering, or mechanical engineering by the start date of employment OR 10 or more years of professional experience in industrial engineering, manufacturing engineering, or mechanical engineering
  • Demonstrated subject matter expertise in one or more of the following areas:
    • Machining and machining dynamics, machining dynamics, machining process optimization, and chatter/vibration analysis
    • Additive manufacturing including material-specific process-parameter selection and support-structure design for printability and post-processing
    • Metrology including GD&T (geometric dimensioning and tolerancing) and advanced dimensional and structural metrology
    • Smart manufacturing including IIoT (Industrial Internet of Things) deployment and AI-assisted in-process quality inspection
    • Manufacturing systems including workplace safety, lean manufacturing, and energy efficiency
    • Federal contract readiness including capability statements, proposal pricing, capture, and supply-chain qualification
  • Demonstrated experience teaching at the tertiary education level or executive/corporate education
  • Demonstrated experience working with clients to develop and execute proposals that meet customer needs and enable successful outcomes
  • Ability to travel up to 50% to partner sites in Oregon for project-related duties
  • Professional verbal and written communication skills
This position requires driving a university vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the university; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a motor vehicle history check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver's license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions as per University Policy 05-030.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Industry experience in aerospace, automotive, metal parts, or industrial automation industry sectors
  • Knowledge of commercial advanced manufacturing products and applications
  • Experience working with third-party suppliers to provide additional products/services
  • Experience in a client-facing role, either engineering or executing technical projects

Working Conditions/Schedule

Normal business hours. Consulting and workshops will take place in-person and may take place in Corvallis or at partner locations during normal business hours. As such, occasional travel within Oregon may be required. Option for remote or hybrid work otherwise. Occasional evening or weekend training sessions may be required. Occasional in-person meetings in Corvallis with the project team.
