Former Metro Council President Lynn Peterson resigned from office on March 12, effective March 13, 2026. The Metro Council must appoint a new Council President by June 11, 2026. On March 19, 2026, the Metro Council approved Resolution 26-5584, declaring a vacancy of the Metro Council President.

The Metro Council is the only directly elected regional government in the United States. The Metro Council consists of a president, elected regionwide, and six councilors who are elected by district every four years in nonpartisan races. The Council works with community leaders and constituents across city and county boundaries.


The Council's meetings take place both in person and online. Council work sessions and business meetings on Tuesdays and Thursdays take place in person at Metro Regional Center in the council chamber and online via Zoom. 


This position is full-time and will be primarily based onsite at the Metro Regional Center, giving the opportunity to stay connected to daily operations and collaborate closely with staff in a collaborative environment. We also offer flexibility for hybrid work, when possible, in alignment with operational needs.


To Qualify:
To be eligible for the Metro Council, an applicant or candidate must be a qualified elector and shall have resided during the preceding 12 months within the boundaries of Metro as they exist when the term of office begins.


Anyone seeking election to a Metro office must file their candidate forms with the Multnomah County Elections Division.

The selection process: 

The Metro Council will hold a public hearing, conduct candidate interviews and vote on candidates on June 2, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. The meeting will be conducted on-site at the Metro Regional Center and will be available online via Zoom.
