The Role

The Director of this Office will lead and support transportation safety efforts across the Agency and statewide. In this role, you will be responsible for safety education and outreach efforts and distribute funds to local governments, law enforcement and others to reduce fatalities and serious injuries. A Day In The Life

  • Lead and direct the Transportation Safety Office.
  • Align statewide transportation safety efforts across the Department, with other state agencies, and local jurisdictions.
  • Determine the allocation of safety grants and direction of safety programs that best reduce traffic deaths and serious injuries.
  • Manage up to 21 staff, including a supervisory manager and program managers, by making assignments, evaluating performance and ensuring accountability for safety outcomes central to ODOT's mission.
  • Implement and monitor plans and budgets to meet safety goals and performance measures of the Transportation Safety Office and Agency.
  • Oversee the development and implementation of the Triennial Highway Safety Plan, ensuring compliance with U.S. Department of Transportation and Transportation's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) requirements.
  • Directly oversee all safety education, training and outreach programs.
  • Represent ODOT as the primary safety contact to Transportation's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and on state and federal workgroups and committees.
  • May require driving and occasional travel in and out of state.
  • Work is performed in office one to two days a week in a typical office environment with hybrid work.

Minimum Qualifications

Seven years of supervision, management, or progressively related experience in business operations;

OR

four years of related experience in business operations and bachelor’s degree in a related field.

Special Qualifications

Driving is an essential function of this position. You must have a valid US driver license and an acceptable driving record. We will conduct pre-employment driving records checks on our final candidate(s). Your license does not have to be issued in Oregon to be considered.

  • Note: Effective Feb. 1, 2026, the compensation plan for this position will be increased to reflect a Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) of 2.5%. The salary listed in this posting does not reflect the COLA.
