What are the responsibilities and job description for the Intern - Firefighter / EMT (Emergency Medical Technician) position at Oregon Area Fire and EMS District?
The Oregon Area Fire and EMS District (OAFED) is recruiting for the position of Intern. An internship is up to a three (3) year commitment where the intern will be assigned a shift consisting of a 24 hour on and 48 hour off rotation. This is a live in the fire station position, where selected candidates will stay for the duration of the internship. Depending on the qualifications of the candidate, hired Interns will be expected to obtain certification as a State of Wisconsin firefighter I and II, as well as obtain and maintain a State of Wisconsin Licensure an Emergency Medical Technician Basic (EMT-B). Additionally, Interns will attend classes to obtain an Associates degree in either Fire Science or as a Paramedic Technician.
OAFED is a combination department consisting of career, paid-on-premise, paid-on-call, and intern personnel currently operating at the Paramedic level. The district covers approximately 47 square miles consisting of urban and rural communities. OAFED provides coverage along the US Highway 14 corridor between the City of Madison and the City of Janesville. The population served is approximately 19,000 people. OAFED operates out of a single fire station that houses two fire engines, a heavy rescue, a water tender, two brush trucks, and two ambulances. OAFED responds to 1,900 fire and EMS calls annually. Training is provided by the medical direction team, along with a robust inhouse training program, and a progressive EMS call review process that encourages learning and growth.
Positions Purpose
Under the direction of the Fire Chief and following the chain of command, the Intern will work to provide the OAFED emergency medical response, fire suppression, public education, and fire prevention in accordance with department standards. The Intern will be part of the daily minimum staffing providing operational support. The intent of this position is to provide the intern with the education and training necessary in an effort to assist an individual in achieving employment as a career firefighter/Paramedic.
Description of the Job
A: Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Working a 24 hour period from 6am until 6am the following day, ensure daily response readiness of all apparatus and equipment. Complete daily cleaning and disinfection of the fire station. Ensure cohesion of mission and purpose.
Respond to emergency and non-emergency incidents as assigned by the Dane County 911 Center in accordance with department policies and procedures. Perform in the capacity of an Intern up to and including all EMS and firefighter duties on an incident scene, as well as in an Immediately Dangerous to life and Health (IDLH) environment.
Perform and complete fire inspections within the OAFED jurisdiction using the corresponding data entry device and software.
Attend each monthly fire and EMS training. In addition, participate, provide, and or support daily company level training for the on duty staff.
Attend scheduled classes in conjunction with the curriculum of related degree programs provided by any of the local technical colleges and/or training centers.

Possess knowledge and skills in relation to fulfilling the duties and objectives of a firefighter/AEMT. Possesses the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships, has strong interpersonal skills, can handle sensitive situations with tact and diplomacy, can communicate effectively both verbally and in writing,and is able to establish and fulfill goals and objectives. Is able to provide positive leadership and guidance to department staff. Additionally, possess knowledge of modern EMS and lifesaving techniques, Community Risk
Reduction, fire prevention and inspection, as well as fire suppression tactics and principles. Has in-depth knowledge of modern informational systems and medical devices, can operate a computer and related software programs with ease.
C: Required Qualifications at the Time of Job Offer:
- A valid State of Wisconsin drivers license, or obtained within 30 days of hire
- High School Diploma or equivalent (or in possession of at the time of start date)
Desired Qualifications:
- Is certified as a State of Wisconsin Firefighter I
- Is certified as a State of Wisconsin Firefighter II
- Is licensed through the State of WIsconsin as an EMT-Basic or higher
- Current Basic Life Support card

Skilled in observing surroundings and activities in both emergent and non-emergent settings.
F: Environmental/Working Conditions:
Work regularly requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions, frequently requires working near moving mechanical parts, wearing an N95 face mask, a self-contained breathing apparatus and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment and occasionally requires wet, humid conditions (non-weather), working in high, precarious places, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to extreme cold (non-weather), exposure to extreme heat (non-weather), exposure to the risk of electrical shock and exposure to vibration; work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic).
G: Supplemental Information:
All successful candidates will be subject to in-depth background investigations, a psychological evaluation and pre-employment drug screening prior to installation in rank and will serve a 3-year term of Internship and probation from the start date.
