The Building Safety Division is seeking an experienced individual to fill the position of Building Official. This position assists the Division Manager by providing leadership and building code guidance to Chiefs, Inspectors and plans review staff engaged in construction inspection and plan review by supporting consistent application of building codes and fostering a high performing collaborative team environment. The Building Official supports the permitting team with guidance for the permitting process. The Building Official Interprets the Florida Building Codes as they may apply to construction activity in Orange County.
Work is performed with independence under general supervision of the Building Safety Manager. Performance is reviewed through observations, conferences, reports and results achieved.
This position may be required to assist with emergency support functions in the event of a declared emergency and/or any other emergency duties as assigned.
Job Description
Representative Duties/Assignments:
Duties may vary based on area of assignment. The following are representative duties, it is not the intent to capture all duties performed by this classification.
Bachelor¿s degree from an accredited institution in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, Architecture, or a closely related field.
Five (5) years of progressively responsible managerial or supervisory experience in construction, building inspection, or plan review.
In lieu of the degree requirement, additional relevant experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
Must possess and maintain a State of Florida Standard Code Administrator¿s License pursuant to Florida Statutes, Chapter 468, Part XII.
Must possess and maintain a valid State of Florida Driver License.
Preferences:
Possession of a State of Florida Standard Inspector License pursuant to Florida Statutes, Chapter 468, Part XII, for applicable discipline(s): Building, Mechanical, Electrical, and/or Plumbing.
Possession of a State of Florida Standard Plans Examiner License pursuant to Florida Statutes, Chapter 468, Part XII, for applicable discipline(s): Building, Mechanical, Electrical, and/or Plumbing.

Job Description

- Performs building construction regulation responsibilities and is charged with the responsibility for direct regulatory administration for permitting, plan review, and inspection of building construction activities within unincorporated Orange County.
- Oversees the enforcement of the Florida Building Codes, Florida Statutes and Orange County codes regulating building construction.
- Provides leadership and direction to Chiefs, inspectors, and plan review staff, including coaching, mentoring, and staff development.
- Discusses technical requirements of plans and inspection with engineers, contractors, builders or owners and approves or accepts modifications as may be appropriate and when they are deemed to be code equivalent.
- Examines complex construction drawings and specifications for proposed buildings in conjunction with inspection and plan review staff.
- Interprets and applies building codes with an understanding of code intent, exercising sound judgment in evaluating complex or unique construction scenarios
- Conducts complex field inspections of new construction while in progress, as required.
- Develops ordinances for the adoption of new codes and standard as required by the Florida Statutes.
- Maintains open communication with the construction industry by providing administrative and technical presentation on process procedure, updated code previsions and alternatives for code compliance.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
