Position Overview
The Ward Aide supports the daily care and comfort of hospitalized patients across a variety of departments. This role is essential to maintaining a clean, organized, and safe environment, ensuring that patients receive consistent attention and that clinical teams receive support. The ideal candidate is compassionate, detail-oriented, reliable, and comfortable handling animals of all sizes, including exotics.
This is an excellent entry point for individuals interested in veterinary medicine who want hands-on experience in a fast-paced specialty hospital.
Key Responsibilities
Patient Care Support
- Communicate with doctors and technicians regarding patient status
- Monitor patients and recognize changes in condition; notify a doctor or technician when needed
- Assist with basic restraint techniques for patient handling
- Feed patients according to specific diets and instructions, using feeding stickers and documentation
- Perform water and litter checks, provide bedding (towels, blankets, decubital pads)
- Walk dogs and provide care for exotic species
- Assist with patient visits or discharges, depending on training and experience
- Handle special-needs patients, including seizure patients or those with mobility limitations
- Collect urine and fecal samples and record findings in medical records
Infection Control & Safety
- Follow isolation and disinfection protocols for contagious patients
- Handle unvaccinated patients safely
- Assist with expired patient care and proper handling procedures
Hospital Maintenance & Organization
- Complete daily ward task lists
- Clean cages, grates, kennels, and surrounding areas
- Perform general maintenance such as sweeping, mopping, stocking, and laundry
- Use cage cards, ID collars, and treatment sheets accurately
- Receive new admissions into the ward
Equipment & Tools
- Understand aseptic technique for connecting/disconnecting IV lines and flushing IVs
- Properly use incubators for exotic patients
- Use bathing equipment and cage dryers
- Utilize phone paging systems
Training & Expectations
- Training: Minimum 4 weeks with experience; 1 month minimum without prior experience
- Attend at least 6 in-hospital CE sessions per year
- Attend required safety training
- Maintain working knowledge of medical records and treatment sheets

Pay: $18.00 - $20.00 per hour
