Summary/Objective

The Software Design Engineer will be responsible for the design, development, and optimization of automation software exclusively for high-speed nonwovens packaging machinery. This role requires advanced expertise in multi-platform automation systems, servo motion design, and robotics integration, applied specifically to the nonwovens industry.

Essential Functions

Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions.

  • Design, program, and commission control software for Rockwell (Studio 5000, ControlLogix), Siemens (TIA Portal, Simotion, Sinamics), Beckhoff (TwinCAT), and Wago (Codesys) platforms, applied to packaging machinery.
  • Develop and fine-tune PCAM (Position Cam) and PLS (Programmable Limit Switch) curves tailored to high-speed nonwovens processes, ensuring precision and repeatability.
  • Integrate collaborative robots (Yaskawa HC10, FANUC) into nonwovens production lines, including programming for machine tending, stacking, and secondary packaging.
  • Configure and maintain machine HMIs, enabling operators to monitor alarms, diagnostics, and production metrics in nonwovens-specific environments.
  • Implement communication protocols (Produced/Consumed Tags, OPC UA, EtherNet/IP, Profinet) for synchronization of upstream and downstream nonwovens equipment.
  • Collaborate with global engineering teams (Germany, USA, Brazil, Mexico) on nonwovens automation projects, providing support in commissioning, troubleshooting, and upgrades.
  • Ensure compliance with functional safety standards in nonwovens machinery, designing and validating safety software routines.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives in nonwovens equipment, driving innovations that reduce downtime, optimize throughput, and enhance cost-efficiency.

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Advanced proficiency with Rockwell, Siemens, Beckhoff, and Wago automation platforms in the nonwovens sector.
  • Strong background in servo motion, PCAM, and PLS optimization for high-speed converting and packaging applications.
  • Hands-on experience with robotics integration (Yaskawa, FANUC, or similar) in nonwovens production lines.
  • Expertise in HMI design and real-time machine-to-machine communication in nonwovens manufacturing environments.
  • Familiarity with safety standards and validation methods for nonwovens equipment.
  • Proven ability to work in international, cross-functional engineering teams with excellent technical communication skills.

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s or Associate’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering, Computer Science, or related field.
  • 5 years of proven experience in software development for nonwovens machinery.

Supervisory Responsibility

This position does not have direct supervisory responsibilities but may provide technical guidance and mentoring to junior engineers, technicians, or service staff during projects.

Work Environment

This role operates primarily in an office and industrial manufacturing environment, with frequent exposure to high-speed packaging and converting equipment in the nonwovens sector. Work may include presence on the shop floor, customer production sites, and test environments where adherence to safety procedures and use of PPE is required.

Physical Demands

The employee must be able to remain in a stationary position for extended periods, operate a computer and related tools, and occasionally move equipment up to 50 pounds. The role requires mobility to navigate factory floors, climb stairs, and perform hands-on tasks such as testing and troubleshooting automation systems.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time, non-exempt position. Standard work hours are Monday through Friday, 40 hours per week. Evening and weekend work may occasionally be required to meet project deadlines or support machine installations.
