About Us
Onward Neighborhood House is a community-based organization serving Chicago families through education, wellness, and social services. We operate multiple buildings and are continuing to grow, including the upcoming opening of our CARES Center.
We are seeking a Maintenance Lead who takes pride in their work, is highly dependable, and can both execute hands-on work and guide a small team.
Position Overview
The Maintenance Lead is responsible for the day-to-day upkeep, safety, and appearance of multiple facilities. This role combines hands-on maintenancework with team leadership, supporting a small maintenance team and coordinating projects across buildings.
This is not a passive role. We are looking for someone who is proactive, self-directed, and takes ownership of the environment.
Key Responsibilities
Facility Maintenance & Repairs
- Perform general maintenance including painting, minor carpentry, plumbing, and basic electrical work
- Repair and maintain fixtures, equipment, and building systems
- Clean and maintain restrooms, common areas, windows, and floors (including carpet cleaning/removal)
- Assemble furniture and equipment as needed
- Monitor and maintain building temperature (heating/cooling systems)
Operations & Logistics
- Transport materials, supplies, and equipment between buildings (including upcoming CARES Center location)
- Assist with building setup for programs, meetings, and events
- Support alarm systems and basic building security operations
Team Leadership
- Lead and guide a small maintenance team (2 staff members) on daily and project-based tasks
- Coordinate workload and ensure timely completion of assignments
- Serve as point person for maintenance-related needs across the organization
Vendor & Project Coordination
- Identify when external vendors are needed
- Request and compare bids for larger repairs or projects
- Coordinate with outside contractors as needed
Administrative & Technology Use
- Use a mobile device to manage work orders, communication, and updates
- Ability to use computers and good writing and reading skills (Basic proficiency in Microsoft Outlook and Excel)
Qualifications
Required:
- Associate’s degree or H.S. Diploma with 3-7 years of hands-on maintenance or handyman experience
- Valid driver’s license and insurance
- Working knowledge of plumbing, electrical, and general building maintenance
- Ability to safely lift and carry up to 100 pounds
· Ability to climb two or more flights of stairs and do strenuous physical work
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work independently
- Reliable, accountable, and detail-oriented
- Be flexible in work schedule (weekends if needed)
Preferred:
- Experience leading or supervising a small team
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) strongly preferred
- Experience working in schools, nonprofits, or multi-site facilities

Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $50,000.00 - $60,000.00 per year
