Onward Education is partnering with a school-based client to identify an Orientation & Mobility (O&M) Specialist to support a student with visual impairments. This clinician will provide direct O&M instruction and support the student’s safe, confident, and independent access to their learning environment.
Brief Role Summary
In this role, you’ll deliver individualized O&M services aligned to the student’s goals and educational plan, collaborating with the broader team to ensure accessibility, inclusion, and meaningful progress.
Position Details:
- Position: Orientation & Mobility Specialist (O&M)
- Schedule: Approximately 1 hour/week
- Setting: Virtual
- Location: Essex County, MA
Current student service needs include:
- O&M services: 60 minutes/week; Virtual
- Additional related service support noted by the team
- Evaluation completion is also required
Responsibilities:
- Conduct O&M assessments and interpret findings to inform service planning.
- Provide direct instruction in:
- Safe travel skills and environmental orientation
- Spatial concepts and sensory cue utilization, including sound, texture, and landmarks
- Cane skills and obstacle negotiation, as appropriate
- Community travel skills, as applicable
- Support evaluation needs and document findings clearly for the educational team.
- Collaborate with families, educators, and related service providers to ensure consistency across settings.
- Participate in IEP meetings and maintain service documentation/progress notes aligned with goals.
Qualifications:
- COMS (Certified Orientation & Mobility Specialist) strongly preferred/required for consideration.
- Certification aligned with ACVREP standards, or completion of an ACVREP-aligned university O&M program.
- School-based experience, or strong understanding of IEP-driven service delivery, preferred.
- Ability to provide services on-site as needed, with flexibility to provide virtual support when appropriate.
