Position Summary:
The Safety Manager supports and enforces all company safety and compliance programs. They work closely with drivers, dispatch, and management to ensure full compliance with FMCSA, DOT, OSHA, and state regulations. This position is key to maintaining a safe, legal, and efficient operation, reducing risk, and promoting a strong safety culture among drivers and staff.
Key Responsibilities
Regulatory Compliance & Safety Management
- Oversee compliance with all FMCSA, DOT, CSA, and state transportation
regulations.
- Monitor driver qualification files, drug & alcohol testing programs, and training records.
- Monitor Hours-of-Service (HOS) compliance and ensure proper use of ELDs (Electronic
Logging Devices).
- Ensure the company passes DOT safety audits, inspections, and reviews.
- Monitor all accidents, incidents, and violations; prepare reports and corrective action
plans.
Training & Development
- Develop and conduct driver orientation, safety training, and ongoing refresher
courses.
- Train drivers and staff on company policies, accident prevention, cargo securement, and emergency procedures.
- Promote defensive driving programs and continuous improvement initiatives.
Risk Management & Reporting
- Analyze accident trends, CSA scores, and safety data to reduce violations and claims.
- Implement proactive measures to lower insurance claims, reduce accidents, and
manage costs effectively.
- Maintain records of all incidents, inspections, and safety performance metrics for
management review.
- Act as the company’s primary contact with DOT/FMCSA and insurance providers for
safety-related matters.
Driver Relations & Safety Culture
- Encourage a safety-first mindset across the organization.
- Provide coaching and corrective actions for drivers with violations or unsafe behavior.
- Recognize and reward safe driving performance.
Qualifications
- Knowledge of FMCSA, DOT, and CSA regulations.
- Excellent organizational, communication, and leadership skills.
- Ability to analyze data, prepare reports, and implement corrective actions.
- Proficient in safety management software, ELD systems, and MS Office.
Performance Metrics
- Compliance with FMCSA/DOT regulations (no critical audit findings).
- Reduction in accidents, violations, and CSA points.
- Driver retention and satisfaction related to safety programs.
- Effective completion of training and orientation programs.
