Job Summary
The Lead Irrigation Technician is a skilled trade classification that serves as a working lead for staff engaged in the comprehensive management of District irrigation systems. Reporting to the Director of Facilities Planning and Operations, the incumbent is responsible for the design, installation, maintenance, and repair of manual, automatic, and computerized systems that utilize both domestic and reclaimed water sources. This role combines technical expertise in pipefitting and water conservation with leadership duties, including training personnel and inspecting work to ensure compliance with safety standards and District objectives.
Key Responsibilities
- Plans, assigns, and guides the work of skilled-level Irrigation Technicians while providing necessary technical assistance and training.
- Designs and lays out new irrigation installations for large turf and landscaped areas, working from sketches, word orders, or general instructions.
- Troubleshoots and repairs complex irrigation components, including mainlines, valves, automatic control devices, and sprinkler heads.
- Adjusts sprinkler controls and timing devices to ensure system operations support the District's water conservation objectives.
- Conducts required monthly and annual cross-connection inspections on reclaimed irrigation systems in coordination with the Plumber or city water department.
- Orders and maintains a comprehensive inventory of tools, parts, and materials for the District's irrigation shop.
- Inspects completed work, identifies problem areas for remedial action, and provides input for the evaluation of assigned staff.
Qualifications
- A minimum of three years of skilled-level experience specifically in the irrigation trade, including the installation and repair of automatic sprinkler systems.
- Graduation from high school or possession of a G.E.D. equivalent.
- A valid California Class C driver's license and a maintainable good driving record.
- Possession of a current reclaimed/recycled water supervisor certificate.
- Proficiency in pipefitting methods, water pressure/volume specifications, and the various timing devices and controllers used in large-scale systems.
- The ability to read and interpret complex blueprints of landscape or turf irrigation systems.
- Competency in operating specialized equipment such as trenching tools, pipe threaders, and testing gauges.
- Ability to frequently lift up to 50 pounds and occasionally move over 100 pounds while working in various outdoor weather conditions.

Pay: $32.42 - $38.64 per hour
