Position Summary
The Lead Environmental Technician is an advanced journey-level, working-class lead responsible for overseeing and performing specialized pest control and environmental safety functions across Ontario-Montclair School District sites. Under general supervision, the incumbent ensures that the application of restricted and non-restricted pesticides is conducted safely and in compliance with state and federal regulations. This position serves as a lead worker, providing direction to Environmental Assistants while managing complex tasks, including diagnosing plant diseases, managing hazardous waste programs, and assisting with asbestos monitoring and disaster preparation.
Key Responsibilities
- Schedules, assigns, and monitors the daily work of assigned personnel, including Environmental Assistants.
- Ensures all pesticide applications and chemical disposal comply with Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) standards and state/federal laws.
- Diagnose pest, weed, and disease problems to determine the appropriate treatment for buildings, turf, and trees.
- Provides training to other employees on the safe use of restricted and unrestricted pesticides.
- Conducts AHERA six-month surveillance inspections and assists with asbestos identification and site monitoring.
- Maintains detailed records of pesticide use and hazardous waste programs and assists in developing implementation plans and handbooks.
- Assists District sites with disaster preparation and supports managers in responding to identified emergencies.
Qualifications
- Graduation from high school or G.E.D. equivalent
- Three years of grounds maintenance experience involving all aspects of pesticide application and rodent control, or an equivalent combination of education and training.
- Possession of a valid California Class C driver's license and the ability to maintain insurability under District policy
- A State/County Qualified Applicators Certificate (QAC) with categories A (Pest Control) and B (Grounds Management).
- Ability to maintain certifications as an Asbestos Management Planner and Asbestos Inspector
- Proficiency in the methods, equipment, and chemicals used in pest and weed control, as well as safe handling and disposal procedures for toxic substances.
- Skill in operating a variety of power and hand tools, mixing specialized chemicals, and recognizing common plant diseases and insect pests.
- Ability to meet EPA competency standards and understand complex federal and state laws regarding hazardous materials.

Pay: $32.42 - $38.64 per hour
