Performs basic technical and semiskilled work. The Recreation Specialist is responsible for assisting with the completion of programs, events, and athletics. Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the Athletics Division Manager.

Qualification Requirements

  • Assists with planning and organizing athletic leagues and programs that serve all demographics.
  • Creates promotional materials to be shared on the department’s social media platforms.
  • Processes athletic program registration and reservations and collect fees.
  • Addresses basic participant concerns regarding participation, safety, operation logistics, and volunteering.  
  • Coordinates officials for scheduled athletic events and ensures payment is reconciled accurately.
  • Responds to and executes public outreach requests.
  • Assists with inventory maintenance and ordering of materials.
  • Works with Athletics Division Managers in the development of new programs. 
  • Assists in preparation of requested and required reports for the Athletics Division Managers.
  • Assist with maintaining the volunteer database.
  • Performs assigned functions as a Disaster Ready Team (DRT) member, if appointed or volunteers.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Some knowledge of community recreation activities and their administration; some knowledge of the principles and methods of recreation program planning and development; ability to develop and execute a program of recreation activities; some knowledge of the principles, practices, and relevant laws regarding recreational sports and youth athletics; some knowledge of league operation and athletic programming; thorough knowledge of safety protocol relative to athletic facilities and management; ability to cooperate with and interpret recreational philosophies to county officials, private groups, agencies and the general public; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with County officials, the general public and associates; ability to communicate complex ideas both orally and in writing.

High school diploma or GED and one year of work experience.

This work requires the regular exertion of up to 10 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 25 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 50 pounds of force; work regularly requires standing, walking and using hands to finger, handle or feel, frequently requires speaking or hearing, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms, pushing or pulling, lifting and repetitive motions and occasionally requires sitting and tasting or smelling; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts within arms length, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions and occasionally requires wet, humid conditions (non-weather), working near moving mechanical parts, working in high, precarious places, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to extreme cold (non-weather), exposure to extreme heat (non-weather), exposure to the risk of electrical shock, exposure to vibration and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).

Salary will be determined based on qualifications, internal equity, budget and market considerations.
