The EMS Training Captain – Education & Simulation is responsible for assisting with the coordination, delivery, and evaluation of continuing education, simulation-based training, skills competency assessment, and advanced Field Training Officer development. This position ensures instructional readiness, consistency, and clinical preparedness across the EMS Division. 
  
 This role supports the EMS Training Officer by providing dedicated oversight of educational delivery and simulation operations. Work is performed under the general direction of the EMS Training Officer. Final authority for curriculum approval, employee evaluation, and corrective action remains with the EMS Training Officer.

  • Facilitates a safe work environment where employees are treated with respect, dignity, and compassion. 
  • Manages performance and completes annual performance evaluations for direct reports. 
  • Coordinate and deliver approved EMS educational programs, skills labs, and continuing education offerings to all EMS shifts. 
  • Plan, prepare, and facilitate simulation-based training exercises, including high-acuity and scenario-driven education to all shifts with approval from the EMS Training Officer. 
  • Coordinate simulation logistics including equipment readiness, scenario setup, and instructional delivery and staffing. 
  • Assist with development, revision, and implementation of lesson plans, skills assessments, and educational materials aligned with current medical practice and credentialing standards. 
  • Support remediation and Performance Improvement Plan (PIP) training through scenario development, simulation facilitation, and skills reassessment. 
  • Assist with development and delivery of specialized education for supervisors and captains to address identified clinical decision-making trends with approval from the EMS Training Officer. 
  • Observe training and simulation activities when delegated and provide advisory feedback to the EMS Training Officer. 
  • Collect and summarize training performance data and system performance metrics to support quality improvement and accreditation readiness and provide feedback to the EMS Training Officer.  
  • Support evaluation of intra-agency drills and large-scale exercises. 
  • Performs assigned functions as a Disaster Ready Team (DRT) member. 
  • Performs related tasks as required.

Physical Requirements: 
This work requires the regular exertion of up to 25 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 50 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires standing, walking, sitting, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel, reaching with hands and arms and pushing or pulling, frequently requires stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling and repetitive motions and occasionally requires climbing or balancing and tasting or smelling; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work frequently requires exposure to wet, humid conditions (non-weather), exposure to outdoor weather conditions, wearing a self-contained breathing apparatus and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment and occasionally requires working near moving mechanical parts, working in high, precarious places, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to extreme cold (non-weather), exposure to extreme heat (non-weather), exposure to the risk of electrical shock, working with explosives and exposure to vibration; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).Associate’s degree in emergency medical services, Education, Public Safety, or a related field preferred. Considerable experience in EMS instruction, simulation, or training program support; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. 

Special Requirements: 
    • Unexpired driver's license valid in the state of North Carolina is required.
    • Paramedic certification from the State of North Carolina 
    • ICS 100, 200, 300, 400, 700, and 800 or ability to obtain within 12 months 
    • RSI/DAI Credential or ability to obtain within 12 months 
    • Instructor Methodology or ability to obtain within 12 months 
    • Level I instructor or ability to obtain within 12 months 

Salary will be determined based on qualifications, internal equity, budget, and market considerations.

Salary : $67,610 - $87,893
