What are the responsibilities and job description for the Internal Investigator position at Onslow County?
Performs intermediate internal investigative work in a variety of investigative functions involving alleged fraud, alleged theft, alleged misuse of public funds, alleged procurement irregularities, anonymous ethics complaints, and allegations involving employees that are more appropriately investigated by an internal investigator to ensure public trust and confidence in the results of the investigation. Work is performed under the general supervision of the County Attorney.

- Plans and conducts independent, thorough, and impartial investigations into citizen and commissioner complaints and concerns related to employees that are more appropriately investigated by an internal investigator to ensure public trust and confidence in the results of the investigation.
- Reports findings of fact and determines if allegations are sustained or unfounded; prepares clear, concise, and well-supported investigative reports aligned with County policy.
- Tracks and manages case files to ensure timely resolution.
- Collaborates with Human Resources, the County Attorney, Risk Management and other departments as needed to identify potential policy violations.
- Testifies in administrative hearings, grievance proceedings or court when required.
- Stays current with applicable laws, regulations and best practice in investigations.
- Other duties as assigned.
Special Requirements:
- Experience in investigations.
- Familiarity with Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) laws and workplace compliance.
- Must pass background check and, if applicable, security clearance.
- Must be able to work outside of normal business hours during active investigations.
