General Description:
The Property Claims Subrogation Unit Manager is responsible for the oversight and strategic direction of the property claims subrogation function in a multi-state and multi-line environment. This includes supervising subrogation staff and/or vendors, establishing recovery strategies, granting authority, monitoring recovery benchmarks, performing audits, and ensuring compliance with company policies and procedures as well as all applicable state regulations.
This individual is responsible for maximizing subrogation recoveries through proactive identification, investigation, pursuit, negotiation, and resolution of recovery opportunities, including arbitration and litigation management. The Property Claims Subrogation Unit Manager will also complete appropriate reporting and communicate recovery results, trends, and exposure analysis to Senior Management at both local and home office levels.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
• Responsible for oversight of all property subrogation activities, including identification, investigation, evaluation, negotiation, arbitration, and litigation of recovery opportunities
• Responsible for interacting with and/or directing subrogation TPAS, collection agencies, arbitration forums, defense counsel, plaintiff counsel, and other claim vendors
• Responsible for developing, updating, and enforcing subrogation policies and procedure
• Responsible for granting authority and providing guidance and technical direction regarding liability evaluation, recovery strategy, and settlement negotiations
• Must verify adherence to and/or compliance with internal policies, procedures, and subrogation best practices
• Must verify compliance with statutory and regulatory requirements related to subrogation and recovery practices
• Responsible for monitoring and reporting key subrogation metrics including recovery ratios, cycle times, aging of receivables, arbitration results, and litigation outcomes
• Responsible for reinsurance recovery coordination and reporting as applicable Responsible for quality control and auditing of subrogation files to ensure proper documentation, timely pursuit, and maximized recovery potential
• Responsible for identifying training needs and providing technical development to subrogation staff
• Must plan effectively and efficiently, organize and handle multiple priorities while working independently; maintain accurate and timely documentation while developing appropriate follow-up measures
• Must work collaboratively with property claims units, underwriting, legal, finance, reinsurance, and external partners to ensure timely identification and preservation of recovery rights
• Responsible for catastrophe-related subrogation strategy and coordination, including large loss and multi-party recovery efforts
• Must travel as required to other Universal locations, vendor sites, mediation, arbitration, litigation proceedings, claim sites, and CAT sites
• Must serve as Corporate Representative when required in mediations, arbitrations, depositions, or court proceedings

Education and / or Experience:
• Bachelor's Degree
• 7—10 years of progressive experience in property claims and/or subrogation management; experience in FL, TX, and CA preferred
• Must have specific property and casualty claim experience at the operational level
• Must demonstrate extensive knowledge of the property claim and subrogation process, including liability analysis, comparative negligence, product liability, contract transfer, and arbitration procedures
• Must demonstrate the ability to evaluate large and complex recovery opportunities
• Must be able to work in a collaborative atmosphere with TPAs, legal counsel, and other vendors Must have prior field claim and management experience in an insurance company or large TPA environment
• Must be computer literate; Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
• Must have the ability to analyze facts, evaluate liability exposure, make sound business decisions, and demonstrate excellent written and oral communication skills at all levels
• Must have a valid driver's license and a satisfactory Motor Vehicle Driving Record
Licenses and / or Certifications:
• AIC and CPCU preferred
• FL 620 or Texas Adjuster License
