Personal Lines Underwriter

Location: Montvale, NJ. Remote candidates considered with established Northeast agency relationships. 

Base Salary: $80,000–$95,000 annually, plus bonus opportunities. 

Employment Type: Full-Time | Direct Hire 

Work Arrangement: Hybrid or Remote. Candidates residing near a company office are expected onsite two days per week. Remote arrangements are considered based on candidate qualifications and agency relationships. 

Job Overview 

On Target Staffing is seeking an experienced Personal Lines Underwriter to join an established specialty insurance organization known for strong employee retention, collaborative leadership, and long-term career development. 

The ideal candidate will have at least five years of personal lines underwriting experience and a background working for an MGA or wholesale insurance brokerage, preferably a competing organization. 

Candidates should have established agency relationships or an existing portfolio within the Northeast. An existing book of business is preferred but not required. Candidates with established agency relationships but no existing book will also be considered, with compensation based on experience and existing relationships. 

Key Responsibilities 

• Review, evaluate, and underwrite personal lines insurance submissions. 
• Analyze risk exposures, coverage needs, pricing, and underwriting eligibility. 
• Evaluate new business and renewal submissions within established underwriting guidelines. 
• Develop and maintain productive relationships with retail insurance agencies. 
• Provide underwriting expertise, guidance, and exceptional agency service. 
• Manage underwriting accounts and identify profitable growth opportunities. 
• Collaborate with internal underwriting and business development teams. 
• Maintain accurate underwriting documentation. 
• Support agency development and retention across assigned Northeast territories. 
• Contribute to a collaborative and service-oriented work environment. 

Qualifications and Requirements 

• Minimum of five years of personal lines underwriting experience required. 
• Previous experience working for an MGA or wholesale insurance brokerage required. 
• Candidates with exclusively retail agency, carrier, or MGU backgrounds will not be considered. 
• Active Property & Casualty License required. 
• Established Northeast agency relationships or an existing portfolio required. Relationships within a portion of the Northeast territory are acceptable; coverage across every listed state is not required. 
• Strong understanding of personal lines insurance products, underwriting guidelines, and risk evaluation. 
• Experience with new business and renewal underwriting. 
• Demonstrated agency relationship management skills. 
• Strong analytical, organizational, and decision-making skills. 
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills. 
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively. 

Preferred Experience 

• Previous employment with a competing MGA or wholesale specialty insurance organization. 
• Established book of personal lines insurance business. 
• Extensive Northeast retail agency relationships. 
• Experience underwriting homeowners, auto, umbrella, flood, or other personal lines products. 
• Experience supporting profitable portfolio growth.
