Job Overview
On Target Staffing is seeking an E&S Underwriter to join an established Managing General Agent (MGA) and wholesale insurance organization in Montvale, New Jersey.
The ideal candidate will have commercial insurance experience, an understanding of underwriting practices, and the ability to evaluate submissions, assess risk exposures, and maintain productive agency relationships.
Candidates with three or more years of general insurance experience are encouraged to apply. Candidates with at least one year of experience at an MGA or wholesale insurance organization will also be considered.
Specialty transportation or trucking underwriting experience is welcome but not required. Candidates with broader Commercial Lines or Property & Casualty experience may also be a strong fit.
Key Responsibilities
- Review new business and renewal submissions to determine eligibility within underwriting guidelines.
- Evaluate applications, loss history, loss-control reports, and supporting documentation.
- Assess risk exposures, catastrophe exposure, loss frequency, and severity.
- Evaluate risk selection, rating, and pricing.
- Prepare insurance quotes and verify policy pricing.
- Identify risks outside established program guidelines and escalate when appropriate.
- Request additional underwriting information and respond to agency inquiries.
- Review renewals, endorsements, and cancellations.
- Work with insurance agents, brokers, and carrier partners.
- Maintain accurate underwriting records and account information.
- Conduct agency marketing visits and develop agency relationships.
- Support profitable portfolio growth while maintaining underwriting standards.
Qualifications and Requirements
- Active Property & Casualty Producer License required.
- Three years of general insurance industry experience preferred. Candidates with at least one year of relevant MGA or wholesale insurance experience will also be considered.
- Prior underwriting experience or relevant experience evaluating commercial insurance submissions and exposures.
- Knowledge of commercial insurance coverage forms, risk exposures, and underwriting practices.
- Understanding of risk selection, pricing, quoting, and underwriting guidelines.
- Experience working with insurance agents and/or brokers.
- Strong analytical, communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
- Availability to work onsite in Montvale two days per week, typically Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Preferred Experience
- Wholesale E&S, surplus-lines, or MGA experience.
- Commercial Lines or Property & Casualty underwriting experience.
- Auto Physical Damage (APD) or Motor Truck Cargo (MTC) underwriting experience.
- Trucking, transportation, or other specialty commercial insurance experience.
