Reporting to the CFO, our client is looking to hire a Controller in the Fort Mill, SC area.
The company has grown tremendously, and the finance function is evolving to support the next stage of growth. We are looking for someone who loves getting the accounting right, thrives in a growing environment, and is excited to build systems. The Controller will own the day-to-day accounting function, lead a team, partner closely with the executive leadership team, and play a key role in audits, systems implementations, and strategic initiatives.
Job Responsibilities:
Accounting Leadership & Execution
- Own the full accounting function, including payroll, for a multi-state, service-based business
- Lead and develop a team of 5 direct reports
- Oversee monthly, quarterly, and year-end close with a high standard of accuracy and timeliness
- Ensure strong internal controls, documentation, and processes
- Serve as the go-to accounting expert the CFO can trust and rely on
Audits & Compliance
- Lead and manage all external audits (experience with multiple audits is essential)
- Partner with auditors and internal stakeholders to ensure smooth, efficient audit cycles
- ESOP audit exposure is a plus (but not required)
Systems & Process Improvement
- Play a major role in upcoming system implementations
- Identify opportunities to streamline AP, reporting, and accounting workflows
- Help modernize the accounting function to support continued growth
Strategic Partnership
- Act as a thought partner to the CFO on financial insights, reporting, and scalability
- Support multi-state operations across 17 client sites in 13 states
- Contribute to longer-term financial strategy with an eye toward future CFO responsibilities
Preferred Experience:
- 8 years of progressive accounting experience
- Prior Controller or strong Assistant Controller experience strongly preferred
- Extensive QuickBooks Online experience is required
- Multi-state and/or service-based business experience is a plus
- ESOP exposure and multi-state tax familiarity is a plus
- Ideal candidate will be detail-oriented, organized, and highly accountable. Must have the confidence to challenge decision making and protect the business, as well as be a collaborative, approachable leader who earns trust quickly
Work Environment & Flexibility:
- Hybrid role based in Fort Mill, SC
- Team prefers in-office collaboration (~3–4 days/week), but this is negotiable depending on the candidate
Salary : $110,000 - $160,000
