What are the responsibilities and job description for the Mechanic Operator position at Olmsted County?
Expected Salary Range $24.40 to $27.04. Full Salary Range $24.40 to $40.77.
Associate's degree from an accredited college in diesel mechanics, automobile mechanics or related field and one (1) year of experience in a similar position as listed in the work functions.
OR
A combination of education and experience equivalent to three (3) years of experience in a similar position as listed in the work functions.
Regular and reliable attendance is a necessary component of job/position. Individuals required to use County vehicles and equipment must have a valid driver's license and be free of any major traffic violations for the last three (3) years.
Required Special Qualifications:
Possession of a valid Minnesota Class “A” driver’s license with tanker endorsement is required within 12 months of employment
Desirable Qualifications:
ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) Certification for Automobiles or Trucks.
Note: Individuals will be required to complete a pre-employment drug test per the Omnibus Transportation Testing Act of 1991 and will be subject to subsequent testing as required per the regulation.
Under general supervision, repairs and maintains county vehicles and mechanical equipment. Operates heavy equipment in snow removal and construction of roads, bridges, and other construction projects. Supports a diverse, respectful, and inclusive workplace.- Performs mechanical work on diesel and gasoline engines, relining and adjusting brakes, carburetors, ignition systems, generators, etc.
- Performs inspections on commercial vehicles and trucks.
- Diagnoses vehicles and equipment for mechanical and electrical problems.
- Operates snow removal equipment and vehicles as needed during winter months.
- Works on motor pool vehicles and other county vehicles and equipment as necessary.
- Performs duties of fabricator and welds as necessary. Repairs snowplow equipment, truck boxes, equipment booms, etc.
- Diagnoses and repairs snow equipment including sanders, controllers, hydraulics, plows, etc.
- Operates medium or heavy equipment such as tandem trucks, motor grader, self-propelled rubber-tired roller, steel wheel roller, etc., to plow and sand roads, haul rock, roll chips on hot tar, etc.
- Responds to calls from the field for emergency repair of vehicles and equipment. Makes repairs on the roadside or at the job site.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Knowledge of the practices, methods, tools, and materials used in the maintenance and repair of automotive, maintenance, construction, and related equipment.
- Knowledge of the operating principles of gasoline and diesel engines, and of mechanical components of automotive, maintenance, construction, and related equipment.
- Knowledge of electronic diagnosis equipment and use of laptops and scan tools.
- Knowledge of current emissions systems and their repair.
- Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of equipment repair work.
- Skill in the use and care of tools, equipment, and materials used in the maintenance and repair of heavy equipment, automotive, maintenance, construction, and related equipment.
- Skill in the use of computers and technology.
- Ability to perform manual labor associated with major mechanical repair work in related equipment.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to maintain a clean working area.
- Ability to inspect a vehicle, identify and repair issues before they turn into problems.
- Ability to perform research to find solutions to mechanical or electrical issues.
