What are the responsibilities and job description for the Network & Security Engineer position at Oliver James?
Network Security Engineer
Full-Time | On-site - Salt Lake City, Utah
Overview:
An actively growing, privately owned organisation are looking for a Network Security Engineer to take full ownership of its network and security infrastructure across office, remote, and Azure cloud environments.
The ideal candidate will come from a strong network engineering background - firewalls, switches, routers, VPNs - and have naturally evolved toward a security-first way of working. Your networking roots matter here, but it's your security mindset that will set you apart. This is a high-autonomy role with real influence, for someone who doesn't need hand-holding to get things done.
Key responsibilities:
- Own and manage the organisation's network, connectivity, and security infrastructure
- Configure and maintain firewalls, switches, routers, VPNs, and secure access solutions
- Support infrastructure across office, remote, and Azure cloud environments
- Lead the migration from Active Directory to Microsoft Entra ID - a key initiative currently underway
- Drive SOC 2 readiness and ongoing compliance requirements
- Strengthen access controls, production security, and change management processes
- Identify vulnerabilities and implement proactive remediation strategies
- Maintain infrastructure documentation and partner with internal and external technical teams
In order to be successful:
Solid network engineering experience is essential and being hands-on with firewalls (Fortinet, Palo Alto, Cisco, Cato or similar), routing and switching, and VPNs. You will also need experience supporting Azure environments and a good understanding of identity and access management, particularly around the AD to Entra ID transition.
SOC 2 exposure is a strong advantage. Above all, you must be someone who takes ownership and operates confidently without close direction.
Why this role stands out:
You will be the primary technical owner for network and security in a business that is genuinely investing in doing things properly. Strong engineering culture, clear progression into infrastructure leadership or security-focused roles, and leadership that is committed to the right hire.
Salary : $100,000 - $130,000
