Position Summary:
The Senior Group Leader / Unit Head is responsible for leading a unit of campers ages 9–10 and supervising the counselors assigned to that group. This role helps create a safe, engaging, and inclusive camp environment while ensuring daily schedules, activities, and camper needs are managed effectively. The Unit Head serves as a role model for campers and staff, helping guide group leaders and counselors while supporting the camp’s mission and values.
Key Responsibilities:
Camper Leadership & Supervision

Lead and supervise a group of campers ages 9–10 throughout the camp day.

Ensure the safety, well-being, and positive experience of all campers.

Build positive relationships with campers and encourage teamwork, respect, and inclusion.

Help manage camper behavior using positive behavior management strategies.
Staff Leadership

Supervise and support counselors assigned to the unit.

Provide guidance, mentoring, and feedback to counselors to help them succeed in their roles.

Assist with staff communication and help ensure all staff understand schedules, expectations, and responsibilities.
Program Implementation

Help plan and implement age-appropriate activities, games, and group experiences.

Ensure the unit follows the daily schedule and transitions smoothly between activities.

Work with specialty staff (sports, arts, waterfront, etc.) to ensure campers participate and stay engaged.
Communication

Serve as a key point of contact between counselors and camp leadership.

Communicate important information, concerns, and incidents to the Camp Director or leadership team.

Help support positive communication with families when needed.
Safety & Operations

Enforce all camp safety policies and procedures.

Conduct regular headcounts and ensure proper supervision ratios are maintained.

Assist in emergency procedures and ensure staff follow safety protocols.

Help monitor camper attendance and ensure proper sign-in/out procedures.
Qualifications:

Minimum age requirement (typically 18 depending on organization policies).

Experience working with children, preferably in a camp, school, or youth program setting.

Prior leadership or supervisory experience preferred.

Strong communication, organization, and problem-solving skills.

Ability to work outdoors, be active, and lead groups throughout the day.

Current First Aid/CPR certification (or willingness to obtain before camp begins).
