What are the responsibilities and job description for the Custodian - Substitute position at Old Adobe Union School District?
Looking for individuals who can work as a substitute custodian for both day and evening shifts.
Under general supervision, performs routine cleaning work in school buildings and on school grounds; performs related work as assigned.
The Custodian I classification is distinguished from other classes in the operations series in that incumbents are expected to perform routine custodial tasks under general supervision, while incumbents in the Custodian II classification are required to schedule the work of others and review work performed.
- Sets up and takes down tables, chairs, and other furniture for lunch periods, special classes, community groups, meetings, and assemblies;
- Sets up public address systems;
- Cleans rooms after use and rearranges furniture;
- Receives and stores school supplies; may order, store and account for custodial supplies as required;
- May submit work requests for major maintenance and repair work;
- Sweeps, scrubs, waxes, and polishes concrete, linoleum, tile and wood floors; sweeps sidewalks, picks up rubbish and paper; empties and cleans garbage cans and waste containers;
- Waters lawns, shrubs and trees, pulls weeds;
- Cleans up after ill children;
- Performs special cleaning tasks requested by staff;
- Washes, scrubs and disinfects rest rooms;
- Corrects and/or reports sanitary or safety hazards;
- Performs minor maintenance work such as removing rocks from sprinkler heads, repairing door closers and stops, cleaning toilet valves, relighting boiler pilot valves, replacing broken tile, replacing broken drapery hooks, replacing lights, adjusting door striking plates, cleaning sink traps, repairing pencil sharpeners, cleaning roof drains and resetting clocks;
- Reports needed repairs to supervisor;
- Performs general cleaning tasks in assigned school classrooms, office and related facilities during the summer months and long vacation periods;
- Replaces, repairs and/or cleans light fixtures;
- Performs other related work as assigned.

- Use cleaning materials and equipment with skill and efficiency;
- Perform heavy physical labor and lift a minimum of 75 pounds using correct body mechanics;

- Understand and carry out oral and written instructions;
- Use basic mechanical tools in making minor repairs/adjustments;
- Meet the physical requirements necessary to safely and effectively perform assigned duties;
- Maintain effective work relationships with those contacted in the performance of required duties;
- Learn and follow the practices, rules, and regulations of the District and the school to which assigned;
- Maintain the confidentiality of school related information.
- Graduation from twelfth grade or equivalent.
- Post Offer/Pre-Placement Physical examination is required prior to hire. Physical demands are available for review upon request.
- One year of experience in custodial type work desirable.
- Facilities Supervisor as assigned.
