The Department of Animal and Food Sciences at Oklahoma State University invites applications for an 11-month tenure-track position (75% research and 25% teaching) in applied animal behavior and well-being at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor. This position carries the expectation of excellence in research and teaching commensurate with the land grant mission of Oklahoma State University.

Position Description

The successful candidate is expected to develop a high-quality research and teaching program of national and international recognition that contributes to and complements the existing research strengths of the department. Research responsibilities will be in the areas of animal behavior, animal well-being, and auditing/assessment of animal well-being in production environments. Preference will be given to individuals who demonstrate potential for developing an internationally recognized, competitively funded research program addressing contemporary issues in the swine and beef cattle industries. The successful candidate will be expected to seek and secure extramural funding in support of an applied, multidisciplinary animal well-being research program in collaboration with other faculty in the department, division, and university. Excellent facilities supporting research with swine, beef and dairy cattle, horses, and small ruminants are available in the Department of Animal and Food Sciences and the College of Veterinary Medicine. Teaching responsibilities may include the existing undergraduate course in livestock behavior. Additional teaching responsibilities will be consistent with the department’s needs and the candidate’s expertise. In addition, the successful candidate will advise graduate students and will also be expected to participate in faculty career mentoring of undergraduate students.

Qualifications

Requirements include a Ph.D. or DVM/Ph.D. in Animal Science, Animal Behavior, or a closely related field. Documented interest, experience and appreciation of production agriculture are required, along with a working knowledge of U.S. livestock industries. Applicants must be committed to both research and teaching excellence and have sufficient experience to qualify for appointment at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor. Preference will be given to individuals with excellent written and oral communications skills, excellent interpersonal skills, documented experience as a dedicated teacher with a passion for student success, and the ability to work in teams and assume leadership roles.

Employment Conditions

This position is to be filled by July 1, 2026, or as soon as a suitable candidate is identified. The position is an 11-month, tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor. Salary and benefits are competitive and based on qualifications and experience. Retirement and long-term disability, medical, dental and life insurance programs are available to employees. Continuation of this position is subject to performance, needs, and available funding. Position is contingent upon available funding.

The Department of Animal and Food Sciences has over 1150 undergraduate students, 60 M.S. and Ph.D. students, and 33 faculty. The department is home to nine undergraduate student organizations and seven competitive undergraduate judging teams.
