About the Office:

This is a reimbursable detail assignment for a period of one year. Applicants must be current Federal Employees. The detail may be extended. Applicants should receive the approval of their supervisor before applying.

The mission of the National Security Division (NSD) is to coordinate the Department of Justice's (DOJ's) efforts in carrying out its core mission of combating terrorism and protecting national security, including protecting our national assets from state-sponsored threats to the private sector. NSD is responsible for supervising the enforcement of all federal criminal laws related to counterterrorism and counterespionage, except those specifically assigned to other divisions. NSD also serves as DOJ's liaison to the United States Intelligence Community (USIC) and represents the government and the USIC before the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court. NSD advises the Attorney General regarding all matters of national security policy.

About CES:

The Counterintelligence and Export Control Section (CES) supervises the investigation and prosecution of cases affecting national security, foreign relations, and the export of military and strategic commodities and technology. The Section has executive responsibility for authorizing the prosecution of cases under criminal statutes relating to espionage, sabotage, neutrality, atomic energy, export controls and sanctions, and foreign malign influence. It provides legal advice to U.S. Attorney's Offices and investigative agencies on all matters within its area of responsibility, which includes 88 federal statutes affecting national security. It also coordinates criminal cases involving the application of the Classified Information Procedures Act (CIPA). In addition, the Section administers and enforces the Foreign Agents Registration Act of 1938 (FARA) and related disclosure statutes.

Job Description:

This position serves as a Legal Administrative Specialist located in the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), National Security Division (NSD), Counterintelligence and Export Control Section (CES).

- Supervises CES's contracted legal assistants - Serves as the office's grand jury coordinator.

- Coordinates the adoption and maintenance of case management/case tracking processes.

- Serves as the section's Contracting Officer's Representative.

- Instructs, advises, and provides technical guidance and assistance to the Section's attorneys and legal support staff, Section-wide, on a variety of tasks including with the work of CES on grand jury utilization.

- Communicates and interacts within DOJ to keep abreast of the latest techniques associated with criminal legal support staff processes, procedures, and requirements related to the use of litigation software, grand juries, case management databases.

- Coordinates with DOJ Security to ensure DOJ Security verified that the packets are complete, and all required data is provided to preclude delay of processing background investigations.

- Creates a suspense listing of all contractor and personnel security actions due.

- Maintains all grand jury files, records, and transcripts. Responsible for the security of grand jury and tax material in a controlled space.

- Preparing, maintaining and updating Grand Jury Orientation Materials for attorneys and support staff in NSD assigned section(s).

- Manages case files (including, e.g., correspondence, pleadings, witness files, subject matter files), organizes evidence, conducts searches, and otherwise mines case data.

- Organizes and prepares exhibits, attachments, binders, indexes, and tables of contents.

- Assists CES prosecutors with research, writing, and related tasks.

  • You must be a current permanent Department of Justice employee with competitive status or a CTAP/RPL eligible candidate.

Qualifications

To qualify for the position of Legal Administrative Specialist, at GS-0901-14, you must meet the qualification requirements listed below.

A successful applicant must have prior experience interpreting legal statutes, codes, regulations, administrative guidelines, and policies affecting the operations of criminal investigations and prosecutions.

You MUST meet all qualification requirements, including time-in-grade, by 05/30/2026 of this announcement.
