The Office of the State’s Attorney for Baltimore City is seeking a highly skilled, experienced attorney to serve as Team Captain in the Misdemeanor Jury Trial Unit (MJT). The MJT Unit prosecutes all misdemeanor cases prayed or appealed from District Court, along with complex or high-profile misdemeanor and traffic matters. The division also serves as a critical training hub for 8–12 junior Circuit Court prosecutors to develop trial advocacy and litigation skills.
This leadership role requires advanced trial experience, strong organizational abilities, and a collaborative, mentorship-driven approach to supporting attorneys working in a high-volume, fast‑paced environment.
Primary Duties And Responsibilities Include
Lead onboarding and training for new MJT attorneys;
Assist Unit leadership in training attorneys on constitutional law, criminal law & procedure, trial practice, and prosecution strategies;
Coordinate off-site training with District Court partners and the Training Division;
Monitor attorney caseloads, review charging decisions, and evaluate plea offers;
Provide ongoing coaching, mentorship, and performance feedback to MJT attorneys;
Manage court docket schedules to ensure efficient case flow and timely proceedings;
Prosecute high-profile and complex matters assigned to MJT, including homicides and serious felonies;
Utilize the Team Captain’s own caseload to create second-chair opportunities for MJT attorneys;
Assist Unit leadership with overall unit management, staff supervision, and data collection;
Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
Juris Doctor from an accredited law school and licensed to practice law in the State of Maryland;
Strong knowledge of criminal law, court procedures, legal writing, research, and advanced trial advocacy;
Prior experience prosecuting and/or defending criminal cases;
Proficiency in Constitutional Law and Criminal Law & Procedure;
Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
Strong motivational and interpersonal skills;
Excellent organization and time management skills;
Demonstrated ability to lead, train, and supervise attorneys handling high-volume caseloads in Circuit Court;
Ability to work effectively with diverse individuals and resolve issues professionally;
Proven capacity to perform under pressure in a fast-paced environment.
Salary: $83,530-$133,471. Salary is commensurate with experience and includes a competitive benefits package.
