This position will serve as a Chemist with the Directorate of Technical Support and Emergency Management (DTSEM), in the Industrial Hygiene Chemistry Division of the OSHA Technical Center, located in Sandy, UT.

  • This position is inside the bargaining unit.
  • This position is at the full performance level.
  • Selectee will be expected to report to the office above.

Qualifications:

The Chemistry series (1320) has an Individual Occupational Requirement (IOR). To qualify for this position, applicants must also meet the specialized experience requirements. The IOR for this position is:

Basic Requirements:
Degree:
physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics.

or

Combination of education and experience -- course work equivalent to a major as shown in A above, including at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

In addition to meting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:

Specialized Experience
is the experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform the duties of the position successfully, and that is typically in or related to the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level.

For the GS-12: At least 1 year (52 weeks) of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level GS-11, or equivalent. Examples of specialized experience include:

  • Advanced knowledge of industrial hygiene sampling and analysis for substances to which workers may be exposed.
  • Knowledge of and experience developing methods to be used for the collection of industrial hygiene samples.
  • Knowledge and/or experience with OSHA chemical exposure standards.
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully work with others in completing complex projects.
  • Demonstrated ability to follow laboratory policies and procedures.

Responsibilities:

Duties for the Chemist position include, but are not limited to the following:
  • Providing on-demand communication with compliance field inspectors including technical assistance on analytical and sampling problems and non-routine or unanticipated circumstances.
  • Reviewing analytical data obtained by other chemists for technical and mathematical accuracy, and reviewing project reports prepared by other chemists for clarity and technical validity.
  • Performing complex and unusual technical and analytical assignments requiring critical thinking and the ability to modify established procedure.
  • Providing technical guidance in area(s) of expertise to other analysts, technicians and compliance officers.
  • Processing, preparing, analyzing, and reporting results for samples submitted by Agency field staff involved in OSHA compliance monitoring.
