Basic Requirements:
Degree: physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics.

Combination of education and experience -- course work equivalent to a major as shown in A above, including at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

Specialized Experience is the experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform the duties of the position successfully, and that is typically in or related to the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level.
For the GS-12: At least 1 year (52 weeks) of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level GS-11, or equivalent. Examples of specialized experience include:

Duties for the Chemist position include, but are not limited to the following:
- Providing on-demand communication with compliance field inspectors including technical assistance on analytical and sampling problems and non-routine or unanticipated circumstances.
- Reviewing analytical data obtained by other chemists for technical and mathematical accuracy, and reviewing project reports prepared by other chemists for clarity and technical validity.
- Performing complex and unusual technical and analytical assignments requiring critical thinking and the ability to modify established procedure.
- Providing technical guidance in area(s) of expertise to other analysts, technicians and compliance officers.
- Processing, preparing, analyzing, and reporting results for samples submitted by Agency field staff involved in OSHA compliance monitoring.
Conditions of employment
- Must be a U.S. Citizen.
- Must be at least 16 years old.
- Candidate required to obtain the necessary security/investigation level.
- Requires a probationary period if the requirement has not been met.

- Demonstrated ability to follow laboratory policies and procedures.
