- Serves as a working leader of three or more employees in accomplishing animal caretaker work. The highest non-supervisory work led is Animal Caretaker NA-5048-05.
- Passes on to other workers instructions received from supervisor, assigning immediate tasks to be performed by individual members of the group led.
- Checks work in progress and upon completion for compliance with the supervisor's instructions on work sequence, procedures, methods and deadlines, and urges or advises other employees to follow the instructions and to meet deadlines.
- Works along with other workers, setting the pace performing non-supervisory work of the same kind and level as that done by the group led. Insures that needed equipment, supplies, and materials are available.
- Obtains needed information or decisions from the supervisor on problems that come up during the work. Provides information to supervisor on status and progress of work, causes of delays, and overall operations. Performs other duties as assigned.

- Health assessment and rabies vaccination is required.
- Exposed to dirt, dust, and height. Subject to cuts, bruises, bites, scratches and ticks from animals.
- Works inside in often poorly lighted or insulated areas, and outside exposed to extreme weather conditions. Inside work often exposes animal caretakers to unpleasant odors and noises.
- Occasionally uses ladder to accomplish repairs.
- Must be able to work a Rotating Shift, which includes days, evening, weekends and holidays
