Qualifications

  • Demonstrated ability to organize and supervise a comprehensive athletic or activity program.
  • Previous successful coaching or advising experience in the assigned area preferred (for major sports or equivalent programs).
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the technical aspects of the sport or activity, with a commitment to continuous learning and professional growth.
  • Serves as a positive role model for students through actions, leadership, and instruction.

Employment Requirements

Employment of coaches and activity sponsors is contingent upon:

  • Successful completion of Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation (BCI) and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) background checks, and enrollment in the State of Ohio Rapback System
  • Completion of all required training through Coaches' Tool Chest (when applicable)
  • Obtaining a valid Pupil Activity Permit from the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce in accordance with R.C. 3319.303 (when applicable)

Application Process

Internal Applicants And Current Coaches

Must submit a Notice of Interest/Bid Form to be considered for available supplemental or co-curricular assignments:

External Applicants

Must submit the following:

  • A completed Notice of Interest/Bid Form
  • A completed employment application through Frontline
  • A rsum and three (3) letters of recommendation, or email addresses for three (3) references so the district may send reference surveys on your behalf

Provide Three Letters or Emails of Reference

Three letters of reference can be brief notes or emails addressed to the district. Each should state how the individual knows you, how long they have known you, and their recommendation for your hire. References may come from either personal or professional contacts.

  • Attach the letters to your Frontline application
  • Email them directly to jlisicky@oberlinschools.net
  • Authorize the district to send a reference survey to the three references listed on your Frontline application (be sure their email addresses are included)

BCI and FBI Background Checks

Please complete both BCI and FBI background checks. If completed within the past year, you may provide copies; otherwise, new electronic fingerprinting is required.

Take the attached pre-coded form to the Oberlin Police Department (85 S. Main St., Oberlin), which ensures results are sent to both ODE and the District. Payment is by check (payable to Oberlin Police Dept) or exact cash only. No appointment is required, but you may call 440-774-1061 to confirm the system is available. Results are typically processed within 7 days and sent directly from Ohio BCI/FBI to ODE.

Coaches' Tool Chest Certification

The Coaches' Tool Chest certificate serves as proof that all requirements for the Pupil Activity Permit have been met. You must upload a copy of this certificate as verification of your Mental Health Training certification when completing your online application with the Office of Educator Licensure.

Effective October 3, 2023, Ohio law requires all athletic coaches to complete a student mental health training course approved by the Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (OhioMHAS).

Please note that this is a single platformyou are trained once a year to meet all state compliance requirements. You no longer have to pursue and manage certifications from multiple platforms.

Pupil Activity Permit

If you do not currently hold a valid Ohio Pupil Activity Permit, you will need to apply through the Ohio Department of Education's online system (OH|ID). If you are advising per 3301-27-01, you will need to provide proof of your valid educator license.

Summary Of Requirements (Per OAC 3301-27-01)

  • Anyone directing, supervising, or coaching a pupil-activity programathletic or non-athleticmust hold a valid Pupil Activity Permit unless they already hold a valid teaching credential.
  • Permits are valid for 3 years (for non-licensed individuals) or for the same duration as a teaching license (for licensed staff).
  • All candidates must meet ORC 3319.303 requirements prior to employment.

Qualifications And Standards

Only candidates who demonstrate a commitment to the highest personal and professional standards will be considered.

All individuals employed or volunteering in co-curricular or extra-curricular positions must comply with applicable Board policies, including Policies 3120.08 and 4120.08, and the OOEA Negotiated Agreement, Article 7.07, which defines the extracurricular salary service index.

All supplemental and pupil activity assignments automatically terminate at the conclusion of the contractual activity each year, in accordance with Ohio Revised Code 3319.11.

Verification And Compensation

No coach or activity sponsor may begin working with students or receive compensation until:

  • Proof of valid licensure or Pupil Activity Permit has been received by the Superintendent (if applicable)
  • All employment and background requirements have been verified, including Coaches' Tool Chest (if applicable)

No individual employed by the Board for co-curricular or extra-curricular duties may accept payment or compensation from any third-party source, including booster organizations, parents, or support groups. This restriction also applies to volunteers.
