Is responsible for conducting interviews and preparing pre-sentence reports and substance abuse evaluations or any other report that has been requested by the judge pertaining to the disposition of a matter involving offenders before the court. Monitors offenders that have been sentenced by the court to probation formalizing a plan of action to assist the individual with compliance of the court directives. Meets with probationers and monitors their progress toward social and economic adjustments and maintains detailed case records, reporting to the court as necessary. Utilizes current Countywide and/or department specific software to complete assignments.
Minimum Qualifications
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Conducts pre-sentence interviews and/or substance abuse evaluations of convicted persons as directed by the court and prepares for the judges a report and recommendations for sentencing based on the individual's personal, social, educational and employment histories, as well as substance abuse, mental health and criminal backgrounds gathered. May discuss cases and/or recommendations with judges.
Monitors offenders sentenced to probation. Meets with probationers to review probation compliance and provide direction to assist them toward compliance with directives of the court.
Contacts defendant's family members, employers, significant others, victims, and law enforcement officers regarding individuals placed on probation and probation issues such as preparation of reports, violations, crisis intervention, etc.
Provides probationer with appropriate referrals and/or community resources (specialization of service, geographical location, financial guidelines) and processes referral upon probationer selection, as needed.
Communicates with community agencies to follow up on a case and clarify or resolve concerns expressed by probationer.
Records and maintains detailed case probation information from interviews and related contacts. Evaluates probationer progress toward social and economic adjustment.
Prepares monthly probation and community service caseload statistics.
Investigates reasons for delinquent reporting by probationers. Prepares show causes and contacts the Criminal unit to issue bench warrants for court action. Testifies regarding violations in open court. May arrange for detention of probation violators.
Utilizes current Countywide and/or department specific software to complete assignments.
Additional Duties & Responsibilities
As needed, conducts substance abuse tests and records result or makes appropriate referral.

Work is performed in a typical office and/or court environment.
May encounter situations where people could become confrontational.

Possess State of Michigan Certification as an Assessment Referral Management Specialist (ARMS) and/or Certified Addictions Counselor (C.A.C.).
Reasonable ability to prepare and present technical written and oral reports.
Reasonable knowledge of counseling practices, procedures, and techniques.
Reasonable ability to communicate under adverse conditions with distressed people.
Reasonable ability to develop and maintain effective relationships with other employees, administrators, and the general public.
Demonstrated knowledge of community resources and/or agencies.
Reasonable ability to carry out written and oral instructions.
Reasonable ability to cope with difficult situations requiring immediate decisions in accordance with departmental policies and procedures.
Reasonable ability to present reports and programs to organized groups in the community.

- DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
- Possess a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a major in Psychology, Social Work, Sociology, Criminal Justice, Human Resource Development, or closely related field.
