Are you interested in a career in corrections where maintaining safety, structure, and accountability is essential to every shift? As a Deputy I with the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office, you’ll play a critical role in maintaining secure and orderly operations within our Corrections or Court Services/Satellite Division. This position supports the justice system by ensuring the safety of staff, inmates, and the public through consistent enforcement of procedures and professional supervision.

What You’ll Do

• Maintain security and custody of inmates within jail and satellite facilities
• Enforce established procedures and regulations to ensure safe operations
• Screen visitors, issue passes, and ensure visitation rules are followed
• Transport inmates to and from courts, police departments, medical facilities, and other authorized locations
• Monitor inmates during court appearances, hospital stays, or medical visits
• Physically restrain individuals when necessary to maintain safety
• Work rotating shifts, including days, afternoons, midnights, or special assignments
• Use Countywide and department-specific software to document and complete assignments

Minimum Qualifications

EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

Required Minimum Qualifications

• Must be at least 18 years old and be a United States Citizen.
• Be a high school graduate or have a certificate of successful completion of the General Education Development (G.E.D.) Test.
• Have successfully completed the minimum standards outlined in the Michigan Sheriffs’ Coordinating and Training Council (MSCTS) providing proof of the following at the time of interview:
• Proof of successful completion of the EMPCO Michigan Corrections Reading and Writing written examination from an approved testing site, per the MSCTC requirements, at the applicant’s expense, AND
• Proof of successful completion of the Local Corrections Officer Physical Ability Test (LCOPAT) from an approved testing site per, the MSCTC requirements, at the applicant’s expense; OR
  
  

NOTE: Applicants who do not possess proof of completion of the standards above at the time of application must provide proof of completion to the Sheriff’s Office by the date of interview.

• Have retired, resigned, or been laid off within the past twenty-four (24) months from a County Sheriff’s Office within this state under circumstances that would qualify the person for employment in Michigan as a Local Corrections Officer.
• Provide verification of completion of the annual 20-hour In-Service training requirement during the time the applicant was employed, or 20 hours of annual training during the time following retirement or resignation.
• If hired as a Corrections Officer in a Michigan County Sheriff’s Office prior to January 1, 2005, provide verification of being included on a “grandfathered” list submitted to the Council by a County Sheriff’s Office (Public Act 125 of 2003, as required by Section 12).
• If hired as a Corrections Office after January 1, 2005, provide verification of completion of the Michigan Local Corrections Officers Academy (Public Act 125 of 2003, as required by Section 13 and established by the Council).
• Submit a Recognition of Prior Training and Experience Form to the Council for review; OR
• If a Michigan certified Local Corrections Officer transfers from one Michigan County Sheriff’s Office to another Michigan County Sheriff’s Office, they are not subject to the provisions listed above, as long as the following requirements are met:
  
  

The applicant has maintained and can verify their certification requirements, and can verify meeting the minimum hiring standards that were in effect at the time of their original hire

date.

• Possess a valid United States motor vehicle operator's or chauffeur’s license.
• Have no prior felony convictions. Misdemeanor convictions will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis to determine qualifying status. Domestic violence convictions are basis for automatically disqualifying.
• Have at least corrected 20/20 vision in each eye, have normal color vision and depth perception in both eyes.
• Have normal corrected hearing in each ear per Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES) standards.
• Pass the complete examination, including the employment physical required for this classification.
• Successfully complete the one year probationary period.
  
  

Special Requirements

• A background investigation will be conducted covering an evaluation of employment, school, home, criminal, military, or other personal records. Any conviction or convictions for moving traffic violations, accidents, non-moving traffic violations, or violations of other laws will be reviewed by the Sheriff’s Office before an application can be appointed. Fingerprinting and drug testing are part of the evaluation process. Information obtained during the background investigation will be considered in the hiring decision. Convictions of the Domestic Violence Statute will be a disqualifying factor.
• A psychological exam will be conducted. This information will be reviewed by the Human Resources department before an applicant can be appointed. Information obtained during the psychological examination will be considered in the hiring decision.
• Must maintain a valid State of Michigan motor vehicle operator's or chauffeur’s license and firearms qualification.
• Must attend and pass the earliest available Corrections Academy training session scheduled by the Sheriff‘s Office.
  
  

Essential Job Functions

Performs inmate security and custody activities.

Performs physical pat-downs and searches of inmates and/or civilian visitors to ensure there are no weapons or contraband brought into the facility.

Inspects cells in order to maintain cleanliness, detect contraband, and ensure order is maintained in all areas of the jail.

Assists in maintaining and enforcing jail procedures and regulations to ensure security is maintained at the jail and satellite facilities.

Operates various electronic controls and cameras to regulate movement of personnel through the secured areas of the correctional facility.

Oversees the distribution of inmate meals, commissary, linens/uniform supplies, and medications in accordance with departmental policies and procedures.

Receives and reviews arrest documentation to ensure inmate admissions are legal and valid. Completes booking process, including fingerprinting, and photographing of all inmates.

Reviews and ensures the necessary paperwork is complete prior to the release of all inmates.

Performs as a group leader over such functions as prisoner visitations, booking, supervision of inmates and distribution of meals, bedding, and supplies.

Maintains and enforces security procedures and regulations outside and inside of detention facilities affecting the transporting of inmates.

Maintains block roster sheets, keeps a written log of daily activities, and prepares reports, when necessary, documenting inmate behavior and/or incidents.

Makes computer entries regarding inmates' status, events, and locations during their incarceration.

Registers and manages inmate property and maintains up-to-date inventory on stored property.

Screens visitors, issues passes and ensures visitation regulations are maintained.

Performs inmate clothing exchanges and keeps records of same.

Coordinates the release of inmates ensuring the necessary paperwork is completed and inmates' property is returned.

Receives and receipts inmates account funds and/or credit card transactions.

Drives inmate transportation vehicles to transport inmates to and from authorized places, including courts and other police agencies.

Guards and monitors the conduct of inmates to authorized facilities and ensures that security procedures are followed.

Guards and monitors the conduct of inmates in hospitals or medicals institutions to ensure security is maintained.

Guards and monitors inmates being held at Oakland County Courthouse detention areas awaiting court appearances.

Monitors the activities of inmates enrolled in programs designed for non-assaultive and jail bound felons.

Utilizes current Countywide and/or department specific software to document inmate status, events, and locations.

Essential Mental & Physical Requirements

Ability to communicate to accurately convey information.

Manual dexterity for performing routine security and custody activities including transporting arrest/ inmates to authorized facilities.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Work is performed in a correctional institution environment.

Frequent exposure to noise, crowds, and may encounter situations where people could become confrontational.
