Are you passionate about community health and helping families thrive? As an Auxiliary Health Clerk with Oakland County’s WIC Program, you’ll play a vital role in supporting pregnant women, infants, and young children by helping deliver essential nutrition and health services across the county.

What You’ll Do

As a key support member of our WIC clinic team, you will:

Support Direct Client Services

  • Review client eligibility information to ensure qualifications
  • Conduct routine health screenings including height, weight, and head circumference measurements.
  • Perform minor laboratory and screening tests at clinic and outreach sites.
  • Reschedule missed appointments to keep families connected to services.
  • Monitor quality controls logs and lab data

Keep Clinics Running Smoothly

  • Schedule appointments and code visits.
  • Maintain and organize client files, reports, and records.
  • Monitor and review management information system reports following established guidelines.
  • Ensure data accuracy and appropriate documentation in Countywide software systems.

Support Health Education & Outreach

  • Provide referrals and connect families with community resources.
  • Participate in outreach events and agency task forces when appropriate.

Be a Trusted First Point of Contact

  • Greet and assist families visiting WIC clinics.
  • Provide information about available services, eligibility, and procedures.
  • Communicate clearly and compassionately with diverse populations.

Minimum Qualifications

EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Possess an Associate’s Degree or equivalent education from an accredited college or university with coursework in Journalism, English, Psychology, Sociology, Early Childhood Education or closely related areas; OR
  • Have Merit System status in any classification and be currently employed in the Health & Human Services Department; AND
  • Have successfully completed at least the equivalent of one (1) year of college at an accredited college or university with coursework in Journalism, English, Psychology, Sociology, Early Childhood Education, or closely related areas; AND
  • Have two (2) years of full‑time work experience in the Oakland County Health & Human Services Department conducting or assisting in various para‑professional health assignments and activities requiring considerable knowledge and a thorough understanding of the various elements involved.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

  • Assists professional public health employees at various locations throughout Oakland County.
  • Assists and provides information concerning available services and procedures to persons visiting or seeking aid at the Health Division.
  • At clinic/conference sites, may conduct routine laboratory tests, screening tests and/or performs selected physical measurements (e.g., height, weight, head circumference) as assigned.
  • Provides prior authorization screening for services.
  • Provides follow‑up regarding client services.
  • Follows‐up on selected children referred from programs to assure medical attention is provided for their problem.
  • Assists in organizing health education materials and audio‑visual aids and displays.
  • Participates in agency task force when appropriate.
  • Attends selected staff meetings and supervisory group meetings.
  • Attends staff meetings and in‑service education offerings for public health nursing groups.
  • Makes appointments for various services, codes visits, separates and organizes reports, maintains files and records, inventories supplies, and performs a variety of associated duties.
  • Assists professional staff in routine licensing and regulatory procedures.
  • Following established guidelines, assists professional staff in monitoring local agency management information system reports by reviewing computations.
  • Assists professional staff in monitoring local agency contract compliance following established guidelines.
  • Assists professional staff in ensuring the accuracy and appropriateness of reports and data generated at both the local and central agency level following established procedures.
  • Assists the public by providing referrals and information such as phone numbers and locations of agencies.
  • Utilizes current Countywide and/or department specific software to complete assignments.

Essential Mental & Physical Requirements

  • Ability to communicate accurately to convey information.
  • Ability to operate and/or utilize typical office and medical office equipment and supplies.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Work is performed in a typical office/medical laboratory setting.
  • May participate in activities that require driving or being a passenger in an automobile.
