VETERINARY ASSISTANT/ TECHNICIAN
REPORTS TO: Veterinary Medical Director or Clinic Manager/Director
POSITION OVERVIEW
Assists or performs tests, vaccinations, and treatments of animals as directed by the veterinarian. Provides compassionate care and assistance with community vaccination clinics and low-cost wellness clinic. Maintains the highest standards of cleanliness, sanitary and safety conditions. Provides constant humane care and handling of the animals. Answers animal related questions and provides client education. Utilizes care to develop cooperative relationships with all coworkers and supervisors. Must be available to work weekends.
RESPONSIBILITIES
· Provides compassionate care to patients and shelter animals.
· Performs all duties in accordance with hospital medical policies and procedures.
· Prepares and maintains the exam rooms, satellite clinic and treatment areas.
· Performs check in and check out of public patients answering any questions clients may have.
· Maintains proper animal identification.
· Gives injections and administers oral medications in accordance with hospital policy.
· Performs emergency procedures such as control of bleeding, resuscitation with oxygen, opening airways, and external cardiac massage.
· Must be well versed in animal handling and restraint.
· Performs clinical laboratory procedures such as fecal flotation exams, heartworm checks, skin scrapings, urinalysis, and fungal cultures; draws blood for laboratory analysis; maintains file of lab test results and ensures that test results are recorded in patient records.
· Admits and discharges patients on the doctor's orders, ensuring that patients are well groomed and in a medically appropriate state. Counsels clients on various aspects of animal care; explains dosage/purpose of medications; reinforces the proper care and procedures that should be followed at home; makes follow-up calls to clients.
· Understands usage and dosage for all prescription drugs and can readily explain them to the clients. Also dispenses prescribed medications.
· Maintains an appropriate inventory of all medical supplies as determined by the inventory control system.
· Keeps animal cages clean and sanitized, and cleans and maintains clinic facilities and equipment.
· Participates in vaccine clinics with preparation of vaccines, obtaining weight and providing proper animal restraint.
· Assists other staff members as needed.

· Maintains positive, cooperative relationships with other employees.
· Performs other duties as assigned including but not limited to the training of new hires.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATION AND LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS
· High school diploma or equivalent
· Veterinary Technician Certification desirable but not required.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Minimum one year experience as veterinary technician or assistant.
PERSONAL REQUIREMENTS
· Genuinely enjoys working with animals and is able to manage them even when they are stressed or ill or in pain.
