Job purpose
The Metallurgist plans and directs activities concerned with developing and maintaining metallurgical standards and procedures for forged product. Supports new product introduction through contract review and development of manufacturing / testing documentation. Develops process control parameters and reviews performance to determine compliance. Performs laboratory evaluation of metallographic samples. Develops laboratories to ensure capability and conformance to requirements. Manages product and process control data.
Duties and responsibilities
New Product Introduction / Contract Review / Change Management
• Review and evaluation of customer drawing and specification requirements directly impacting metallurgical product integrity and manufacturing practices
• Develops quality plans and documentation requirements to evaluate metallurgical integrity of forged product during the manufacturing process
• Qualifies incoming orders to ensure specification compliance for metallurgical/special processes / complete review as quality representative
• Ensure metallurgical properties through design and communication of wire drawing, heat treat, testing, and other manufacturing instructions
• Prepares first article / metallurgical qualification approval documentation
• PPAP’s development and completion based upon customer request
Test Failure / Thermal Non-Conformance Review And Analysis
• Disposition metallurgically non-conforming material and performs root cause correction action analysis
• Coordinate internal and external laboratory analyses of samples
• Responding to Corrective Action Request (CAR).
• Negotiate concessions with customers for disposition of non-conforming parts
• Develop corrective action processes and continuous improvement programs for metallurgical integrity of product
• Assist in troubleshooting and Root Cause Analysis of process-related defects and effects on final products
Laboratory / Production Support
• Conducts internal and external quality audits of metallurgical / special processes
• Lab evaluation including metallography and NDT micro examination
• Orchestrating maintenance and calibration of lab equipment with internal and external resources
• Ensuring proper heat treatment through daily review of processing records
• Evaluating heat treat furnace performance including detailed review of critical product
• Confers with Manufacturing and Engineering personnel in planning, scheduling, coordinating and directing quality / metallurgical evaluation activities to ensure conformance to customer requirements and specifications
• Incoming raw material verification / release and product testing release and handling nonconformances & CARs with rod vendors
• Participate in Six Sigma, Orange Belt, and problem-solving teams
• Participant in Continuous Improvement and problem-solving teams
• Follow Environmental, Quality and Safety Management System procedures and requirements
Supervise Lab and Rod Receiving
• Staging daily activities for performance improvement and technology advancement
• Lead from inception to implementation of OP Projects Assigned
• Supervise Lab to achieve objective, performance metrics and innovation
• Document, measure, track performance metrics for GM Technology & Quality all direct reports and contractors
• Consider and investigate work performance improvements through technology, robotics, etc.
• Recognize the sensitive nature of information – communication shared and retain confidentially
• Increase quality knowledge and understanding of company
• Oversee rod receiving/staging, QC Final Inspection and any other direct reports or contracts within the Quality responsibility
• Provide annual performance review of OKS rod receiving/staging and QC Final Inspectors and any other direct reports
• Perform / Support System Audit, In-Process Audits CQI-9 audit & Gage R&R Study, and Customer Supplier Audits/Visits
• Supervise equipment calibration and maintenance activities.
• Perform / Support customer claims and In-House rejection investigations and CAR’s implementation
Qualifications
• BS Materials Engineering, Metallurgy, or Materials Science required
• Steel industry experience preferred
• Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and effectively manage multiple projects / tasks
• Familiarity with ISO 9000 / AS9100 and NADCAP quality standards
• Knowledge of statistical techniques, SPC
• Experience in Lean Manufacturing
• Ability to solve problems effectively
• Strong analytical skills and attention to detail
• Must possess solid analytical skills in defining problems, collection data, establishing facts and drawing valid conclusions
• Strong computer skills (MS Office, ERP)
Working conditions
Requires standing, walking, bending, and twisting for duration of scheduled shift, exposed to noise and dust daily; safety glasses, metatarsal steel-toed shoes, hard hat, ear plugs, and high visibility clothing is required when on the production floor.
Physical requirements
Lift minimum of 50 pounds, bend and climb, able to see and hear, must be able to identify and distinguish colors.
